Just bought first yammie! 1600 miles but has a few pull outs in middle. Two size of square backer plate. They are flaps & I have been told to cut them out completely and scorch edges with torch. One is about an inch from window and concerns me going to run her as guy before me did. So what is the max clearance for a replacement track without going to 8 drivers I just read about here? Hoping 1.25" would work? Which track ripsaw or hacksaw? Lots of marginal snow riding, back roads, ditches and rivers. Hope to get to groomed trails too but that would be the exception. Also found a 03 RX1 track on line local last night. 144 studs down middle. Track has 1800 miles on it and studs 300 miles. No pull outs or tears pretty cheap as guy sold sleds with the 252 pitch. What is up with two windows open & two closed? Can I put it on as is or would I need to cut open those windows? The track is only $200 bucks so you can see my interest. Should I just buy new & forget about it. Can't wait to explore site but needed quick answer on this one. Thanks
 
I believe one inch is the max for not having to change anything. Then over an inc you can remove guard if not running studs or notch lugs for clearance. Lots of info just search around. Used tracks are fine just check rubber condition and more importantly the underside of the clips for wear.
 
I think you would be fine with a1.25, worst case scenario you may have to trim the lug right where the protectors are if they do rub. What lug is the one you can buy for $200? pretty sure you can get a driveshaft bearing kit for around $40, well worth it in my opion knowing all bearings are brand new versus ????? while you have it apart.

X2 !! Ya got it ripped down that far.....might as well plunk down another $40 and do it right. If ya don't, it kinda like........taking a sh!t and not wiping. You feel better................but not really.
My kit was an ALL BALLS.

Last kit I got was a ALL BALLS as well, haven't used it yet. Don't remember what I paid for it. Bender has the kit for $33.xx..plus tax and shipping of course, Probably an ALL BALLS kit they put together.
 
Missed out on track guys. Called him back and he said a guy just came to his work and paid for it without ever seeing it! Buddy has a 600 srx with a kimpex 3/4" ultimate with 144 1" woodys. His seems to hook up well and that combo clears the tight front heat exchanger. Rode sled today with stock track- one with pull outs. Ran well idled great. Seem to have some slight backfires at low throttle but beyond that it was great. Didn't want to hammer it since the track is marginal. Thanks for replies guys appreciate your time. Just need to find a yamaha sled head here in SE MI I can pay and maybe help with the track swap plus the extras speedo, bearings, check skid w bracket for cracks, etc.
 
I have a 98 600 and a 99 700 with the ultimate under them. 700 heavily studded the 600 came pre-drilled but have yet to put any in. Pretty decent all around track.......stay away from the deep stuff, In my experience the like to DIG themselves into a hole. Your SxR is a little lighter and may not be as bad.
 
i have the same sled, i put a 1.25 inch camoplast challenger track on it without any problems. i would for sure change those jackshaft bearings while its apart. thats a damn good snowmobile, fix the little things that are wrong with it and it will last you years. that backfire and rough running is probably your carbs. they need to be cleaned at the start of EVERY season. you get that thing running good and hooking up with a new track, you will love it. 2001 is a good year for an sxr700.
 
If you plan to stud I'd recommend a 1" track and 1.075" studs. A 1 1/4" without studs will fit and either combo will require track trimming to clear the HX protectors.

You're correct with your caution regarding your current track. Coming apart at speed can make a big mess and a heck of a ride... with no brakes.

There are a bunch of us in S.E. Michigan.

For what it's worth, I just put an inch and a half ice attack under mine.pulled front exchanger protectors out.so far so good.mine is a 97 but I don't think the tunnel is any different than yours.

I was thinking of going that route but I heard those are now single ply tracks and have delamination issues? Apparently the early ones were 2-ply and lasted much longer. Have you heard about this?

I saw some posts about de-lamination, but my last track was single ply and I bought it used and rode in very little snow for 2 maybe 3 seasons.
(Sw. Mi. After all) and it did not come apart.so I figured I would give it a shot.can't vouch for longevity at this point, but damn my sled hooks up hard now.

I know a lot of guys around here that work on them but as Straggs says, I'm only hear to here myself think.

Doesn't sound like a bad price provided the guy taking it apart isn't the reason things don't come apart well.

Not sure who Straggs is as I am new here.
Would do so myself if garage was heated...I might still tackle it....looking at a ice ripper XT with 1.25 lugs. Kens Sports said it should clear. I have another issue. When I hit the brakes hard I hear a metal clunk sound coming from clutch area versus brake area on other side? If I don't brake hard no noise and breaks seem to work well. This sled was not giving the best care before I got it but compression is good at 125 each cylinder. Seems it would be worth the new track investment?

if that sx only has 1600 miles, it would be well worth the new track investment. that redhead tripple engine is arguably the best tripple yami ever made. it will last you a looooong time if you maintain it properly (like 10 or so thousand miles or more). fix all the little stuff and you will have a good reliable sled. btw, i am told that an 01 model is the best one. mine sure rips!
 
How far SE mi are ya?? I may be too far away but if your in the GR area i know amatosrx is down there and he's a ton of knowledge and help. Might want to look him up and PM him for some help.

I'm by Port Huron. I am trying to find a reasonable option but don't seem to see one. Ice Ripper tracks don't seem to have the same bite as a regular studded track from the reviews. So $450 for track and they tell me I would need at least 144 studs with backers for another $300 and then at least $200 to put it on. So $1K to do it right.
