need some help

can some one with 01 or 02 sxr srx or viper 700 (with the separate hand and thumb warmer control) take the voltage at idle and 3500 rpm with the grip warmer knob on high? and measure the amps please?

im trying to figure out why my grips are cold, and am stumped.

2001 sxr 700 btw, any ideas? post em!
 
First check to see that both grips are good. A simple ohms test will work as if ones bad neither will work. If you have the newer style rubber grips they should ohm out at about 1.5 give or take and 3 ish in a series. I have checked all of mine and they are all slightly different but in that ball park. Also a continuity test will see if you have a broken heater element or not. If continuity and ohm check are good then you move on to the controls. Those i have never had to test. well i want to eliminate every thing else before i buy a cdi. i never really hear of people with the 3d ignition system with hot grips? once again if any one could go measure there sled so can compare that would be great
 
Not to state the obvious but did you buy the right hot grips?? Most of the "hot grips" brand are not compatible with yamaha, this is why i stuck with oem grips. All my OEM ones will melt your hands on high, even my apex bar ones are too warm to run on high. They are a bit pricey as anything oem yamaha is but its hard to put a price on warm hands. Somthing to check into if indeed you did get the "hot grips" brand.
 
i did not see any. they get warm, but not hot like the old ignition system. and if i had a rub through the diagnostics light would come on telling me theres a short. but ill look again.

What do you mean by this? That an 01 SXR, or 01-02 SRX's, or 02-04 Viper's, for example, all have "cool" grips compared to, say, an 00 SXR, 98-99 SRX's, 97 Vmax, etc?
If that's what you mean, I can say that the 01 SRX and the 2x 02 Vipers that I rode last year all had great grip warmers, and all have stock grips. I never needed any of these on high for very long, if at all. I was always turning them down after a short time of getting them heated up on the higher settings. Coldest temps I rode in last year were likely single digits F, as well as teens and 20's.
 
alright so its not the nature of the beast i guess, rule that out. does any one have the trouble shooting piece of the service manual for the newer ignition system? i only have it for the old one in my manual.
 
I have the newer wiring schematics I could send, doesnt look like any relays (only for passenger on venture models) judging by the fact you say they get warm its probably your high limit wire or switch thats bad/the variable resistor. The only wires going to your grip heaters should be yellow/red and black. (blacks being your ground). There are variable resistors that control your grip heaters and your thumb heaters, The resistor for your grips is connected directly to your cdi through a yellow/white wire and black/white.
 
i could really narrow this down if some one could test a working sled with hot grips and post the voltage and amp specs on here!
 
tested resistors, it came out good. load control relay is functioning properly, manual says to check the stator and pu coil but im not having any ignition problems that would point to that. it says replace voltage regulator but once again no problems with dim lights or rough low idle. im down to condensers(cant test em) or a cdi unit. how often do condensers go bad? and what symptoms go along with it?
