Viper only getting 8000 RPM's

Okay I will try that. I may not be able to take it out till this weekend and it'll have to be up in my field because it rained the other day and it's going to rain again so the trails will be suck. Do I need a very long run to get a good reading? My field isn't very long and its mostly uphill. Its not ideal I know, but there's not much I can do without snow. Hopefully it'll be good enough to get an idea of what's going on. Thanx again for all your help. I should have a really sweet ride when we get this figured out.
 
Well I tried what you said tonight Mr Viper and marked my clutches with a marker to see where the belt is riding. I figured I better do it tonight before all the snow is gone after it rains this weekend. Even though I have only a short run up in the field it feels the same out on the trail. A longer distance doesn't seem to get me any more rpm. On the primary the length of the bare spot is about 2" long and the bare spot on the secondary is about 1.25" long. I don't know much about clutches, but it doesn't seem like I'm getting the full range there. I have the secondary spring in the 1 and 6 setting, this is 70 degrees right ?

Those mark should be erase till 1/4 inch from the top primary ... Not sure how long was your stretch
 
I made a few runs, but the distance is short. Its probably 400 feet uphill. But like I said it feels exactly the same on the trail with a longer run. I don't have anywhere else to run it right now because the trails are closed. Hopefully I can get it straightened out before we get snow again so I can just ride it. It'll hit 8000 then exactly fall back some.
 
youll need a bit more room to open it up and try the marker test again, I just want to see if your shifting out the clutchs or something is holdng it back no other explanation for whats happening other then not shifting it out.

yes, 6+1 would be 70 twist.
 
Is that some sort of a belt deflection adjuster on the secondary outside the helix? Or is it simply the holding washer I am seeing. Maybe show us a pic of the helix at an angle. Also could you take a pic behind the secondary. Just a little to the left from where you took the right pic so we can see the shaft.

I saw the adjuster and aftermarket helix too ding, you know where i am heading with this test....lol
 
I had a Viper here a few years ago that did pretty much as you are describing. I checked the stator, and it was out of spec. I replaced the stator, and the sled worked like new.
 
That is a belt deflection adjuster, good eye Ding. LOL And that is a 53/43 helix that I got from pioneer. That weird thing is that it acted the same way with the old clutch parts the previous owner had from a SRX. You guys must think I have something wrong with my clutch, binding or something ? I will get some more pics tonight for you guys.
 
Well I took a few pics after I got home from work tonight. I even took the secondary clutch off and took a couple so I hope I got the angle you need to see.

If this there isn't anything wrong with my clutches I will definitely check it out. I'm thankful for everyone's help. I was even thinking about borrowing a compression tester to make sure that's ok.
 
I'm just not sure I should remove any weight from the tip till I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the clutches. I've had the same problem when I had triple pipes and a totally different clutch setup. There's something I'm missing that's common to both setups. I appreciate your help and maybe in the end your right about it, but I can't remove weight right now since I don't have a scale. LOL. I think this will be something simple in the end, its just finding it that's the hard part.
 
check the stator. Sounds to me like the high speed coil is faulty. I've had one Viper here do this same thing, and plenty of Arctic Cats. The amount of time you have wasted typing clutch nonsense here, you could have ohmed the stator, and either found the problem, or found the stator to be good. Check it at operating temp.
 
i am having a very similar problem superfan, my sled from the intial pulls right to 8500 then bogs out on top to about 8100, I think i found my culprit, i took off the primary cover took out the spring and my outer sheeve the plastic riders and inner bushing on the sheeve are shot. pretty damn sure it is making my sled bog down because i never had this problem. The sheeve you can make it kind of wobble. I would check that first to see yours is good and doesnt have any excessive play.
 
Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Are the three bolts missing on the back of the secondary? Maybe it's just the light.
