Sled set-up, and maintenance. One bad bushing or bearing can cause havoc.

Was it even close?

I'd start by going thru your clutches looking for worn parts. Then work your way back. How does your sled run now? Any problems?
 
My vipers been taking good care of. I just did all the drive bearings and jackshafts. I cleaned my carbs and replaced my powervalves. I have 96 studs with a I would beleive a normal lug track. The vmax has not much maintanance. But has a inch and a eighth track with inch and 3/8 studs. He hooked better in the pond. I spin a quiet a bit but can't seem to catch him. I'm wondering if its just cause I have more power and less traction.
 
You never know what the other guy has done to it. I raced an F6 last weekend and figured it should be easy but we were pretty much dead even....come to find out he had a lot of clutch work done vs my stock set up. My stock set up isn't gonna be stock for much longer tho!
 
The 99 and earier SXs[pre SXRs prior to long travel] were very efficient sleds. And I suspect the way our 99 700 was setup it would have had little problem with a STOCK Viper in a drag race or radar run
Our 99 700 SX had following mods:
-gutted airbox
-carbon fibre reeds
-reed spacers
-drilled exhaust can
-thin head gasket
-1`predator lite weight track
-regeared
-thundershift weights
-adjustable transfer rods
ect
This sled worked so well with the stock single pipe and above mods that it actually was slower when I installed the tripple pipes until I finally got it dialed in.
 
the pre sx-r was a great sled like bob posted. the 97 sx really run hard. we have done three for tar raceing and did get one in the high 9,s. i had a 97 sx and beat alot of 98 srx,s when they came out. even up i would say they are faster than vipers 3:16 (yammie tony)

I just did some work on my old 2000 SX. I had ported this sled many years ago and the person I sold it to brought it back to me to convert it back to a single pipe set up. With the porting, reeds and pipe mod this little 700 would give a scare to many larger sleds including the SRX's. I am still impressed with these red head engines!!!
 
anything is poosible, its all about the set up. The better set up sled wins..period. This is the same reason why you can wax a thundercat with a srx thats set up and the thundercats not.

now on to playing the devils advocate..... on the comparisons, I would hope a sx with that many changes would beat a STOCK viper, come on, your comparing eggs and apples other then the fact they are both 700 snowmobiles.

If you make the comaparison the same,via long travel to long travel,stock clutching,stock gearing,everything stock the viper will walk right on by a sxr.

you guys are comparing a short travel skid, clutching,gearing, porting,thinned headgasket,reeds, transfer rods, a whole host of extensive mods to a bone stock sled...................... mod sled to a stock sled........

redheads are good little engines but they are 113-115hp , thats all......."stock" now, not all modded up...

I guess it really all comes down to whats the meaning of "stock"....LOL, that should open up some worms....

Yes...and thats why you NEVER underestimate the sled you are up against.
I always thought Stock meant original decals!
You always have to be prepared to pull up to the line.
 
DON , MY 97 SX WAS BONE STOCK EXCEPT 8CA CLUTCH SET-UP AND MEGABITES. I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. IT CRUSHED MY 99 SRX EVERYTIME WE RACED, NO MATTER WHAT I DID. WE HAD A BOX STOCK SX GO 11.23 IN 1/4 ON TAR. THEY FLY. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
I've had a couple sx 700 that ran very well also, never did anything but maint, setup suspension and fairly aggressive clutching. Srx would get it on top end but other than that was always a good run. Always run 1" tracks and 144 studs on both.

Lol, just remembered how amazing them inch tracks were back then.
 
My viper is stock and so is the vmax as far as we know. Mine has 17,000 km on it though he has 14,000. Would that play a big part. I still have 110,110,100 from mag to clutch side for compression. I thought that was alright.
 
If those compression #'s are accurate, they are on the low side. May have to freshen up your motor.
 
If you are spinning that much more at the line and sucking your belt down that could be most of your problem.put better traction and transfer to that viper and it could be a differnt story.
 
Dont some racers say that most races won or lost in the first 100'? It takes pretty big HP to win on the big end of the track. If he hooks and you dont, well there you go...
