On my 97 600xtc, I have TPS and now, after i rebuit the carbs, my sled is flashing a TPS code (long flash, long flash, short flash). Did I install TPS wrong? Do I need the TPS or can I just ignore the code and ride? What's the actual purpose of the TPS on the sled? My 97 700sx doesn't have a TPS.

if you do indeed have a TPS you will have to make sure it is set up right.Have to do voltage and ohm test on it.I have TPS on my 02 SRX,made a device to test all that and to adjust it .But I had to replace the original TPS because it was out of wack when I tested it.Make sure it is plugged in right or it will flash
 
that sled does have tps. did you alter the position or take it off when you cleaned the carbs? if so, dont do that anymore, its not necessary.

if you didnt mess with the tps switch and your plug connector is on tight and you didnt bend any pins and they are clean, you should be good to go. if you did loosen or remove the tps, you need to adjust it back to specs. you will need a good quality multimeter and some patience, along with the setting specs of course.

the tps works along with the cdi to alter the timing curve throughout the throttle range. so yes, you need it.

Sorry to activate this tread again... I can't find any threads on the TPS that you mention.

The code it's throwing is "discontinuity or shorting of tps is detected." Could it throw that code if it's out of adjustment or is it some wiring issue? What will happen if I run the sled with this code (Besides the light blinking being annoying)?

I searched using the terms "tps" "t.p.s." and "throttle position" and none of the above threads came up... if you could attach a link, that would be great.

you have to check to see what voltage you get,mine was was out as well and needed replacing.Got mine at cost from a dealer,stepson knows the owners..
 
blue I am not sure if you meant me when you posted about checking voltage.the problem I have is I can not find what the constant voltage should be if I could find what it is or should be.I could eliminate that.as it seems to change as I probe.what rpm does or should the stator supply that voltage?.I replaced mine with a used one broke original dont ask.had this on a rack my son bought for parts possible it is bad.if I knew the constant I could eliminate that part.I could then adjust tps IF big IF its is good.as you know they are not cheap.I like all people I know I was born with only two hands:whine:it would come in handy to have an extra 2or4 when trying to hold probes and turning tps not sure how sensitive they are when turning.first need as I said need constant then go from there.appreciate your input and time.that applies to anyone who jumps in.:o|in checking this post I realized I highjacked the thread caught up in moment.I am sorry Dcf1999 and Bluemonster1

Ok... thanks for all the links. I read them and determined that the sled can be run without the TPS working. All that will happen is the performance lacks. It's the wife's sled and she probably won’t notice a lack in performance.

I'm going to use the threads and test my TPS to see if it's good or not... if good, then I'll make sure it's adjusted properly. If it's bad... well it's probably not getting replaced... and here is why:

The sleds a POS... lol... I bought it for $300 from a buddy who just bought it from someone else. I was told it just needed a jug and piston. I rebuilt the engine and started finding other issues. In the summer, took off the suspension and had to replace a bunch of parts... Long story short, every time I need to fix something (usually minor), I wind up fixing 3 other issues. I'm a perfectionist and like having stuff run in tip-top shape. I inspect all my "toys" annually (sometimes more often) and replace any parts that start to wear and/or fail. I've learned it's better to fix issues before they break because sometimes, when a part breaks, other parts break. Anyways... about half the sled is new Yamaha parts lol. I always buy new Yamaha parts unless I can get a good used part… I think the guy who originally owned the sled was just a horrible shady tree mechanic who’s never owned a torque wrench. Things were just jerry-rigged and I've even noticed SAE bolts "self tapped" into spots where they obviously should be metric. Had to fix a lot of stripped out holes and bolts (my reference to not owning a torque wrench)... The steering column must have broke at one point or something… The guy cut it in half and then welded it back together (crooked I may add)… Replaced that column and noticed the idler arm bolt was stripped (assumed he over-tightened it). For the amount I put into the sled, I could have bought a nicer one… It's just ridiculous. Now I’m just venting… I apologize.

Anyways... there is 1.5 - 2 months of winter left... My wife and I just want to ride. I'm probably dumping the sled in the spring and buying myself a newer one and giving her my 700sx. I kind of want an SRX... those sound f*cking awesome!

I really don't want to put another $100+ into the sled... Every time I work on it, I get pissed off because something else breaks and/or I notice another thing that's all F*cked up on it.
 
Is there a way to bypass the tps and stop the light from flashing?

And for a tester, instead of building one, coudn't a guy just use a 5v dc power adaptor? Like the cord you plug into a laptop or smth.. but the output voltage is 5vdc (2.0a)... From there you could probably just cut the round end off, strip the wires and connect clips to that...

Tested my tps per manual... getting correct resistance with ohm meter at idle and pushing the throttle... tried setting it and getting no voltage reading at all. Connected neg of the test box I made per previous thread to terminal 2 and positive to terminal 1. Read voltage off terminal 3 (middle one). Neg lead from volt meter is connected to the neg lead of test box. It's not showing anything as I play with throttle and/or rotate TPS... which I guess means the TPS is bad? Heck... maybe I'm doing it wrong. I'm going by the video posted in one of the threads you guys gave me. I'm going to trace the wires also to make sure there isn't a open somewhere... If I leave it as is, the light will keep blinking... If for some reason, the sled detects another error, will it display both codes? If it starts to overheat (which it tends to do sometimes), will the temp light (which is the same as the code light) go on, and stay lit like it's supposed to? Any way to disable the TPS so it doesn't throw a code?

I'm searching eBay for a used TPS but I can't find one... and like I said before, I'm not throwing more $$$ into this POS... It's getting dumped or scrapped in the spring. I'd sell it but I'd feel bad for what I'd be sellig them.

Another question... I search for yamaha TPS or yamaha 600 TPS and they come up on ebay (if I search for the actual part number 8CR-85885-00-00, none come up).... They look exactly like the one that's on my 600 but either different part number or make of sled... Since, what i read, said they were pretty much a reostat, can I use on of those? I know they are all made by Mikuni... just don't know if the "internals" may be different (i.e. they have a different resistance)
