Why did they run the heat grips through the cdi box?

I am looking over my sleds. I keep thinking about my 2000 sxr heat grips vrs the 01 and news sleds. the newer sleds heat grips don't get really work at idle or really while your riding. I hooked up 12 v to grips and they work great. I am thinking about running my viper and 01 sxr like the 00 so they are hot at idle unless you turn them down.

Just want to know why they ran them this way.
 
I think if you do that. it will back feed the cdi box. If you bypass the cdi box then you will get a warning light. I am looking at the series and parallel thing for the grips now. searching that is. Funny thing is both my 01 and viper warmers don't work well at all. getting tired of it. so working on both and tested everything. hook up batt and they get nice and hot. both have 13.5 to them. I am looking at all options
 
It's 300W DC power and needs to be converted to AC.
I think it also has something to do with providing all the available power to the ignition system at startup and idle. As such, I've never fully fouled a plug, even while idling for 20 or so min digging myself out from getting stuck. If it wasn't DC power, and didn't need to be converted, it could be simple and easy with a condenser or something like when your headlight takes a few seconds sometimes to come on after you start it.

Either way, I LOVE the machine, but I'm not impressed with the grips on my SXR either. Sometimes you hop on the machine with cold, and sometimes even wet hands right from the get go. Then you have to wait until they warm up. Sometimes that can get painful.
Also seems almost logarithmic and throws more juice the harder you work your machine, but I could be wrong. They work, just not great. Nature of the beast.
 
I haven't had any issue with mine on 00 SRX....Start with them turned WAY up and are turned WAY down (nearly off) before to long at all. I do buy quality waterproof gloves for riding though. Any body ever put Yamiheaters on a two stroke? They were designed around 4 strokes. I don't know if they would work on a two stroke or not.

00 runs great. Should be the order system that works great :) I was talking about the 2001 and newer
 
run my 01 in series they do heat alots ...couldn't get any warm hand in the normal ways
 
UPDATE....

Found out my viper is putting out 13.5 and everything looks good. I figured I would try running them the other way. Separately. Now they are a tad warm at idle and get hot at around 3500-4000 rpms while holding it there in the garage. Much better. Trick worked. My 2001 sxr I am going to do the same way and see if they are better. Only problem is the voltage is only coming to 11 - 12 volts. I bet there is more of a problem. Plugging front and rear grips to batt and they get hot.
 
my 2001 sxr runs 11.95- 12.1 volts aswell i think thats how they are supposed to. i did an amp draw test and got 3 on my 2001 sxr, did it to my 2000 sxr and i blew the 10 amp fuse.... that was through the grips, not shorting it right to the ground.
 
Update...

Ran the grips separate and they get hot. Not quite as hot as my viper but I am getting only 10.5 - 11.9 to grips. Need more juice. Searching for testing from grips back. Once I get the power I need then they should be good on both machines running separate.

what are you supposed to be getting to the grips? because mine and my buddies 2001 sxrs are all the same at 11.9 to 12.1 volts

ok thank you. Did you try running your separate like I did?
 
running them in series you wont get 13-14 volts across each one because you are losing voltage across the resistance in the other grip, run them in parallel and you will get a higher voltage across them individually but also will be drawing more amps
 
They run the grip warmers through the CDI to make you go F¥€king nuts over a blinking light on the dash! My sled was giving me an intermittent code for the thumb warmer resistor and it ended up being my grips. The glue broke free and when they twisted it broke the wires in them. Sometimes they would complete the circuit, other times not. Drove me nuts, ended up changing to wrap on heaters with grip wrap over them. Stupid task to put I the CDI, there is enough going on already.
 
So please help me understand. How did you hook them up differently? From new they are word in series correct? How have you run separately? Are they still controlled by the dial our did you just run a 12v source to test?
Mine get earn after 10 minutes of rising but never too hot. Always on high.
 
Update....

Went for a short ride last night. Yes now they work like they should. No problems so far on either machine. My son was so happy. If you want hot hands then this is the way to go Impo. Thanks for the help. Also no codes :)
