I just bought multigrip. Both 3/8" and 5/8" head sizes.Definately do NOT use the cheap hardware store rivets! There a couple guys on the site here that sell the good kind. Stavex rivets are the way to go, I think they are the same as OEM.

being creative and "artistic" makes me do stupid things like that. If I could I'd paint or powdercoat every piece on everything possible in awesome color schemes.

That actually isn't so stupid, I was just thinking that the red rivets might look kinda cool on a red sx.

its the bulkhead i think, look under the motor towards the back of the sled and see if you can see the bottom of the bulkhead pulling away from the belly pan. thats what mine was doing.
Could you possibly tell me more about this? I need to know if its this or the exchanger itself is just loose. Maybe a pic if youre really kind? Thanks.

Joining the convo late here, but I had this problem at the beginning of last season. I have a 6" riser on mine and figured it loosed from the extra leverage I was exerting onto the steering shaft. With this in mind I didn't want it to happen again, so I pulled the engine and built a cross member of sorts that supports the side of the mount closer to the engine. It bolts on the end of the steering shaft bushing and bolts to the aluminum panel on either side of the steering shaft. This is to help support side to side pressure exerted from me trying to carve on the sled.
These guys are all right, OEM type rivets!! This is a long job, but not particularly hard. I have heard of insurance companies totaling out sleds when these center exchangers get destroyed just because of the time involved on replacing them....not to be a debbie downer, just to give you a realistic view of what your bill could be, going to the dealer.
I was in a hurry when I put that support in and I don't think I have a picture.

Dealer quoted me 5 hours @95 and hour to do it right. Guy said he could pop some in to stiffen it up, said it would be kinda Mickey Moused but would get me through the season and would take an hour todo. So I went that route, should last the season and I will do it right come spring when I have time and it's warm enough to work in the garage.

So it's all good again!? Could you possibly snap a pic of the front heat ex for me to see what you did with it?

I'll try to get one, dealer put something like 20 rivets in from the top bottom and sides. It's actually pretty ridged, I may leave it like that.

Ill probably be having someone just weld the exchanger in so it doesn't move at all anymore. I don't have the time or motivation to rip the sled apart completely to fix it

Just found my 99 vmax 500sx also had play in steering and wouldn't you know found that the rivets that hold bulk head to I guess you could call it the belly pan all the rivets were snapped. But the flange that gets rivets to belly pan had moved so much it started to tear from bulk. So what I'm not sure is is the exchanger part of the bulkhead or a completely separate piece? I want to reinforce it as much as possible.
