Hello,
I am new to this forum and saw an interesting post from "MrViper700" while googling clutch tuning. I have a 98 SRX700 and want to know about clutching. His post is:
I wouldnt waste your $$ on a bender kit, just get a set of 2000-02 srx weights(8dn-20) put a 4.5 rivet in both holes, along with a yellow/silver/yellow yamaha primary spring, 51/43 helix with green secondary spring at 70 and it will be a ripper!

This was a while ago when posted and wondered if its still true and where to get the parts. With the whole part number maybe yamaha sports plaza would have them. I dont even know what half of his post means,"at 70"?
I am good with everything else but when it comes to clutching, I can take one off and thats about it.
Thank you,
Vic

Yes that is a good setup. Do a search on the site and read up lots and lots of good stuff here.

You can PM him, as from what I've seen on here is he's a great go to guy and more than willing to help out

im pretty sure he will tell u not to use that helix angle now .......it will make your sled overrave on top ;)!

I did PM him, just didnt look yet. I cant afford to over rev. I already smoked the motor 1 mile after I bought it due to it was -14F out and I barley looked at it when picked up. Simple problem, dont know if I would have seen it or not. no 3 fuel/oil line to carb pinched in half and blew bottom end on that cyl....While idling! OOPS
motor is stock

No answer on PM. What is the "new" hot setup? If I have complete part numbers, I could order them right from yamaha. When you say helix, I am assuming both, not just 1 right? So pretty much a whole new driven clutch? I dont know what half of the terms mean. Maybe Mrviper700 has all this stuff and wants to sell. I believe 8400rpm is as fast as you want to spin. I also have 2002 decals on my hood on a 98 sled I just found out while ordering stuff. Someone must have crashed it bad once. That avatar pic is a week old and now looks like a different sled with some of the upgrades that arrived. I just took my pain meds and am rambling but still in pain.

clutch weight part numbers:8dn-17605-20-00 you need 3 of them.
clutch rivets 4.5 gram-90261-06033-00 you need 6 of them
primary clutch spring, will have a white, white, white paint mark on black spring, part number-90501-603L2-00 need 1 of those
secondary clutch spring, will be black with green dot, part number-90508-556A2-00,need 1 of those.

helix part number-8fa-17604-00-00,need 1 of those

51/43 means the angles on the helix, 51 start and finishes at 43, the 98-99 srx is fine with this helix as it doesnt make as much horsepower as the 2000-02 does and it turns a lower peak rpm, you want 8300rpm peak rpm, the engine will not blow up if it revs more it will just not give peak performance. The new weights are already heavier and more aggressive then the stock 98 weights which lowers rpm.

70 means: 70 degree of twist when installed, youd use hole 6 in the helix, and hole 1 in the clutch.

take these part numbers to your dealer and order the parts.

Oh I see. I am going to go look at whats in it now just because I need a smoke. I thought I had to get the helix and the sheave to make them match. No yellow/silver/yellow anymore or was that for a newer sled? What kind of engagement will I have? I will have to do a little cleaning up on inner driven sheave because when I installed motor, I must have not tightened that motor mount bolt enough and it backed out and rubbed on edge of clutch. I will see if yamaha sports plaza has all this and order. Should be like riding a different sled right?
Thank you for all the help.
Vic

OK
Looks like green/white/green on primary could see secondary color. I see no rivets, The weights are held in with bolts with tiny set screws, if thats what I'm looking at. Oh yeah only 1 helix, guess I never really looked close enough.

ok everything looks good except primary spring part number 90501-603L2-00 comes up as yellow/white/yellow.
I will see if I can find the w/w/w part number

OK everything ordered. Just gotta find out where these rivets go. Didn't see any in the tech section clutch kit setup(I think it was a V-Max).

Their tuning rivets, they go in the weights, different rivets weigh different and u use them for fine tuning. U will have to get the existing rivets out of ur weights and replace em with the new ones Which are a little heavier.

The new weights have rivets in them already? Do you know at what rpm it will engage at? Still not sure what primary spring to use so I ordered both w/w/w, y/wh/y.

I put in a 51/45 bender racing helix and the rpms for the 8dn 20s loaded setup were perfect spot on

here's what i'm running in my sled

Primary

WWW 8dn-20's with 4.5 rivets in both holes
engagement 3800 Launch 8200 creeps to 8450 on top very nice pull

Secondary
Bender 51/45 helix with green dot black spring set 6-1

gears 23-39

track 1.75 sno X

Stick with that white white white like mr viper said. Great setup. Ran it in a 99 srx 700

I assume these are not pop rivets. How do you install them. I will be using 2 for each weight. I thought I saw a home made rivet tool somewhere on here. What would the y/wh/y spring do to engagement? I will start with the w/w/w but I like to experiment.
Then I get to do my 94 wildcat 700EFI with a weird old school comet primary and bone stock secondary.
