FINALLY HAPPENED...a first for the 600

Well after my repair an old stud from when I got it came off or loose while I was stuck and punched a big hole in the heat exchanger so in <20km its down again. I am hoping it can be patch with a aluminum plate welded over it. This thing is costing me some money now and a bit ticked off at this front heat exchanger design. If and if I get another sled I'll be certain it doesn't have one up front. Frozen ice (slush) in the tunnel top dropping down while riding can be driven into it jamming the track as well as taking out that exchanger. Its a terrible place for one to be placed.

My riding season is nearly written off after a few clicks and no snow for them to open yet although its quite cold. I was only able to go along a field where its drifted enough to ride above ground contact a half a click back and forth.

well finally got to open up the 600 and see what gives.On removing the head I immediately see a chuck of piston and mangled rings on the exhaust side.The cylinder has gouges below and above the exhaust port,see cylinder is garbage now.I removed the piston from the rod and upon further investigation realize the top friggen ring spun itself around and got nailed at the port..damn what luck eh!! I will have to order 1 new piston and will order 3 complete set of rings to do all pistons just for a fresher up.
At least no water or plugged jet issues,never had any in this motor and it has almost 18,000 km's and has been ridden hard all its life.

I will look around locally first to see if I can find a cylinder, if not then I will look abroad for one for a decent price..

just a locating pin failure, way she goes! at least it wasn't a catastrophic failure. my question is, where is the part that broke off?

about 1 inch of ring is gone and a chunk of piston..it all got blown out the exhaust ...lucky nothing more devastating and taking out the crank yet

There's a dowel pin that is in the ring groove that keeps the piston from rotating. They are pressed in and sometimes just push out. It can happen from incorrect installation of the piston into the jug when using a ring compressing tool or some times it's just a fluke and they slip back. I've seen it before on a few occasions on outboards but never on a sled.

Yeah! Lucky it's just a piston and cylinder, that's relatively cheap compared to a crank. Is the dowel pin still in the piston or is it floating around the crank case? Might want to check.
 
I can still feel a little bit of the pin on the piston,can't remove the bottom ring in order to compare the 2 pins for size.Again the top ring was the one that caused the damage,the bottom ring is still intack and lined up with the pin,so I gather everything would of blown thru the exhaust.

had the motor rebuilt in 2010.New gaskets,pistons,rings,pins,roller bearings,crank seals,water pump mech.seal,etc .Had 12650 km's on the motor at that time.Besides the damage on this cylinder,I can still see the cross hatch's on the cylinder,just my bad luck with a ring turning I guess.This would be the very first issue ever with this 600 engine which are bulletproof 99% of the time.So the ring took 4 seasons to turn..lol
 
Places that repair/replate cylinders will weld damaged cylinders - for an option.
 
There are a few on ebay. I didn't look too much but saw maybe 5. All the ones I saw were $150-$250 and sleeved or "reman". I....hang on.....Nope, thought I saw a NOS one. I think yours is repairable. I wouldn't buy any I saw on ebay today.
While looking, I found each trailing arm for srx. add said "perfect" the right one was bent 10 degrees. (maybe perfect 10 degrees bent with angle finder). I also wouldn't buy the one thats "steal" sleeved. I am no spelling bee winner but even ebay has spell check...

I really do feel bad about your sled. I have a nice one but its a 700.
Did I see something wrong with pto cyl also?
