Starting a little project

Well I pulled the carbs. Checked the mains. Thought I had 147.5, but they are 148.8. Needles were dropped all the way. Plugs show rich. Swapped out to the 147.5 and raise the needle to the middle. Need to wait till the weekend to maybe get a test run in.

Ran the sled two nights ago with the new jets and needle setup. Engine runs great.. But feels like I'm lugging at the low end. Think the primary clutch is sticking. Lucky enough I had a clutch from an sxr 600 triple. Swapped out the clutch. Sled is completely different. Pulls hard all through now with only a slight big at initial acceleration. Which I'm sure I can clean up with a small carb tweaking. Need to put me wrap on my secondary to get it to shift better. But I think I find my problem.

So question, can I run the weight and spring setup from an srx 700? I can get one for fairly cheap.

Well, clutch needs new bushings and a new fixed sheave. New ring gear if I want the electric start working... Which of course I do. Everything else looks good...

Little update... Got my primary clutch rebuilt... Still had a low end bog, I seemed to be over fueling at the low end all the time. Adjust the pilot screw, nothing changes, I have the leanest pilot jets Yamaha lists. After several tanks of fuel... 4mpg. Had a brain fart... Never checked float level. Sure enough they are way too high.

Not sure if that's all it is, no snow here to test it... Hopefully we get a bit so I can confirm my fix.

May want to throw some new needle and seats at it. There is an o-ring in there that can dry up and shrink, and the tip of the needle is rubber.
If either of those is not sealing correctly, you may be passing way more fuel through than necessary.

Needle Valve Assy
1AE-14190-15-00
$13.94 (x2)

O-Ring
8F2-14147-00-00
$3.71 (x2)

and if you aren't running stock pilot jets

Jet, Pilot (#45) FOR VX 600/005
3H1-14142-45-00
$3.40 (x2)

Mixture screws should be 1 1/2 turns out.

I replaced the needle and seat and I have 45 pilots. Screws at 1.5 turns.

However not sure if I replaced the o ring... Just have to wait for snow and check how she runs I guess...

Picked up a 97 XTC 600, 1600km on it. It's a deluxe with all the bells and whistles. Ran it a little last year, maybe 150km. It had a horrible midrange and sucked back gas like crazy. It has 100psi both sides, cleaned the carbs but it didn't change. This thing is all stock.
This year I picked up a few goodies for it. I picked up a set of vforce3 reeds, a new cobra track, and a set of tuner2 skis off a 2015 viper. Hopefully it will wake up a bit. Anyone try mounting tuners? The track and reeds are basic. But I don't think skis will be direct bolt on.

Hi I know how you feel not knowing anything about Yamaha sleds at the time last year I picked up at 01 500 Venture and this is the first season I have been able to ride it and it also has no low to mid range and it sucks gas like you need a gas station at every 45 mile ride and sucks down oil too If I knew this I would have passed up on this sled I saved it from being parted out. For me riding this is you go from idle to full throttle that is were I am most of the time. I can't wait to find a 700 triple that is wrecked so I can swap it over. What I do not understand is how could Yamaha make a 2 up sled that is for mostly low speed trail riding with another person on the back and have a motor that does not perform in the low to mid range RPM's and suck so hard on gas. I shake my head

Well I used to own a 97 venture 600 twin. It was pretty decent on fuel. Dad had it from new and put over 10000km on it. I just spent two seasons chasing the fuel consumption issue... Hopefully after adjusting the floats it will improve immensely.

Sacked out clutching components contribute to p!ss poor mileage on the twins in particular.
Just had the primary rebuilt. Floats way off, that would cause upwards of 25 percent more fuel use. Just gotta wait till the snow comes back...

Rode the sled over the weekend. Still getting bad mileage, seems to lug in the mid range. Belt seemed to be riding low in the secondary about a quarter in.. Think that could be it?
