Hello everybody,

I recently began wantin to buy a used sled...my last was a good old '87 Yami phazer...I just sold it a few months ago to a close friend. I went looking for a few sleds, a ZRT800, and a Cat 440 4 stroker. Neither are quite what I was looking for. Then i started reading these forums and information on the SRX models, wow what great reviews! I instantly decided this was the sled for me after heading to a dealership nearby to check out a 98 model. Now the dealer said that he had just received it as trade...and it wasn't his to touch / sell yet. Another break was that 60 sleds out of the used inventory will be sent to the Grass Drags this weekend to be sold. This kind of puts me in quite a rush to get it. I asked what a defenite price would be and he said $2,000 even, wow what a price! It has 3,300 miles on it. There is a catch though, he says I can buy the sled for 2,000 as is...and that it would cost $80/hour to service the machine fully. Is this a deal to stray away from? I am going with the $200 to put down tomorrow..Is there anythign specific i should look out for, he said he will personally take it home and clean it up a bit before selling. Sorry for the long post and i hope to be part of the community soon
;)!

Check the track for wear, check up under the tunnel for dents, check under the hood for rusted exhaust (a littler rust is good, but if its flaking thats bad).
The condition of the track is going to be your best indicator of wether or not the sled was abused. If theres a lot of torn out studs, you can bet that the sled was beat pretty hard.
Im a little confused about the whole "$80 an hour to service the machine fully". Other than maybe changing the chaincase oil there shouldnt be much servicing that the sled should need.
I personally think that $2000 for a '98 is a little steep, but with how rare good used SRXs are starting to become, maybe its a good deal afterall.

What he meant by the $80 an hour to service the whole sled is that he will give it to his crew to go head to toe on it..and charge me probably $300 more on the sled. But then he can reassure me that there was nothing wrong with it when it was put on my trailer. Buying it as-is i risk getting sled that could have something wrong with it the second i get home. And yes, I will check the track for damage. Thanks for the reply!

I bought an 02 Viper in near showroom condition with 5900 miles for $2400. $2000 for a sled that is 4 years older doesn't seem like a good deal at all. Also, if I remember correctly 98 & 99s had the crankshaft problem. You will want to make sure the crank is within spec. Yamaha fixed them under warantee.

Believe it or not that is the average going price that I have seen for 98-99 SRX's in this area..Which is Southern New Hampshire..Any other suggestions? So far they are great

I'd think $1,600-$1,800 is a good price for a 98. the 98's had problems with the crankshafts so make sure that is updated. i would definetly look into a newer srx or a viper if it were me.

Heh, well i've already applied for a loan for $2,000 :o| so lets hope that there are no hidden fees lurking around. I am getting an older SRX simply because i am not spending more than $2,200..I am giong to college any only working partime at the college. Making about $700-800 a month :dunno: So this seems okay to me, thanks for the replies!!

The price seems to be a little high , but not too far off..One thing I learned is that you never know if you got a good deal until 1-2 years down the road..It happened to me I bought a truck for a killer price , the piece of crap ( only 3 years old ) cost me a ton of money.. Well guess what I didn't get a good deal!!!!! Good luck with your new sled, hope it all works out ..

By the way the sled only has 3,300 miles..which i think is pretty low. If the track is in bad shape what do you guys say? Buy a new track for it soon or dump the deal and look for something new? Thanks for all the help so far

check the tunnel paint for wear along the floorboards, usually if the paint is wore off at the back of the tunnel it's had a few hot suppers. a track will cost you $320.00 plus install depending on the track. the tune up of a srx at the dealer can get real pricey real fast especially if they start changing parts a power valve is around $80.00 each if you need any. if the sled is cherry i'd spend the 2 grand for it. if its picked look for tears where there used to be picks. and they can run the serial # at the yami dealership to see if the crank has been welded. :2strokes:

$2000 US for that sled seems AMAZING here in Canada! I'd be paying about 4000-5000 CAN for a sled in that condition. Man, I think I need to go to the USA to buy my next sled. Hell, I'll sell my Phazer right now if I can get an SRX or Viper for anywhere near $3000.

Only problem with a deal like that is its in Wisconsin, a long way from NH. I am going to take a look at the sled tomorrow and ill take alot of pics of it for you guys, then you can take a look if you want to.

Thanks Tomseal but...by the time I drove down there from NH youre talking probably the leftover 250 to make it 2000 in gas money heh, towing a trailer anyways..i'm not too keen on the buying a sled over the internet, or driving way down there just to see it.

sled

I'll sell you my srx 01 with 3000 miles. I wouldn't buy one that old stick with 00-02 if you can.Don't rush into it just because you have the money or a loan right now! The problem is your'e not going to find a nice 00-02 for under 3000.00 .

good luck ;)!

Just try to find out if the crank update has been done or not. Then look at the tunnel and definitely check the bend in the rails of the rear suspension. This is a high wear part and people have run right through the hyfax and into the rails at this bend.

UPDATE: I went to look at teh sled today...i found it has a brand new 0 mile Ripsaw track..and the last owner rebuilt the suspension before he sold it off. I went to start it up but it didntd run at first, teh guy said it had been sitting since april so we threw some spray in the airbox it fired right up. heres some pics/
