VMAX 4 800 VS THE SRX. !! 3:16 (tony)

My sympathy goes out to you srx guys. Now that there is a vmax4 category on TY, you are no longer top dog! Feeling "blue", are you?

Tony very cool post. It amazes me how many Yamaha guys still have such a passion for this animal we call Vmax 4. YAMAHA I HOPE YOUR LISTENING.

when Yamaha came out with the srx in 1998, they said it would beat the v max 4 800 by 4 sled lengths. here is my true take on this having both.
1. srx was faster on the grass, when the srx was in its grass domination i say it would beat the vmax 4 in the '' stock class ''
2. when both modified, the vmax4 is just to much hp for the srx to handle
3. what hurt the vmax 4, like any sled from that era was extreme weight
4. when amsnow tested the 1995 vmax 4 800 (MY SLED) it had fastest stock mph still to this date than any yamaha ever tested
5. the 2001 srx set e.t. record there which i believe still holds today for any Yamaha tested.
6 set-up on the vmax 4 is huge, very docile sleds in wrong hands.
7 00-01-02 srx,s were a handful even in lame hands.
8 i have a 95 800 that i poured my *** off into set-up. it will take both my srx,s. NOT A WALK IN PARK THOUGH.
9. LIKE ANYTHING ELSE. '' SETUP IS THE KEY

Stock srx around 140hp, 800 150hp, weights.....not far apart, I had a 98 and a 95 800, weights not far off. I know what the manuals say etc. however when you actually get them both on a scale ready to race...not much difference.

i agree, srx is know lite weight either. 3:16 (yammie tony)

great thread Tony, i will have to get that set up from you...
opsled i sent you the email for paypal for the hydraulic set up
The triples are cool, i spent a ton of money on my 97 sx700 and it was indeed fast, i dont think I got beat by other 700's maybe tied or were close giver or take a couple feet, but the sensation from the triples was not the same as the mighty Four! just a unique sled from start to finish!

My white srx 700 is a awesome tripple sled it gives u a felling like no other sled. When the weight is removed and motor work is done they r great. I would like to try a vmax 4 someday

I know that we can talk about what if's all day long. It's still puzzles me to this day why Yammi chose to make the srx a 700. Especially during that era when the 800 triples were dominating the horsepower wars. Now we all know that for "only" a 700 it was still very competitve especially with a good setup. And how well they run as a 780. An 800 srx would have been a formidable machine for sure. And with a little weight shaved off, just consider the possibilities. When they had a great 800 4 cylinder motor and they replace it with a smaller 3 cylinder motor. Just doesn't seem to make sense. Despite their factory claims.

QUESTION I ASKED THE YAMAHA REP : SPRING YAMAHA POWER SURGE SHOW IN 2001. '' WHERE IS THE SRX 800 ''
ANSWER " WE BEAT EVERYBODYs 800 WITH A 700 '' . true storie
the srx 700 is one of those sleds that was just a great combination. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I have both right now and working on them for local grass drags coming upon the 27th
the SRX is running a picked track and the Vmax4 is running a stock rubber track both set up for stock class no engine mods or pipes.

Thanks Wildmax, pull your motor out and send it down for a shine.

Spoken like a TRUE company man. I wonder if that same rep can tell everybody why after decades of running the 5 valve engine on most of their high-performance and race 4-strokes why they chose to abandon it in favor of a more conventional 4 valve arrangement.

Easier and cheaper to manufacture a 4 valve head vs 5.

Now on the v-max4 to SRX comparison. Both are great sleds! In factory stock condition I would choose the SRX performance wise. Style I love the look of the v-max 4 and the srx. Sound goes to the v max 4. Over all winner in my books? I couldn't choose one or the other. I love them both!

That's my thoughts, too. Over the years I have had four VX800s and three SRXs. Also, many other sleds including newer Yamaha 4 strokes. I have kept one VX800 and two SRXs, all highly modified for mountain trails - all engines reworked by pizor and always tweaking the clutching. Most of the time, these are run non-stop hard and fast until someone needs fuel - which of course is the big Max after 80 miles.

Head to head: I do not know about drag racing as I'm not into that. However, on a several mile rally type course it all depends on set up and I really cannot say one will take the other. There is hardly a sled that can hold a corner like an SRX and that is where it will take the VX800. Coming out of the turn, though, my VX800 just picks up its front end and flat leaps to make up any lost ground - the torque is so strong it seems like the whole frame will twist in half. In an endurance run, I suppose the SRX would win simply because it won't run out of fuel as fast.

Of the dozens of sleds I've owned my overall favorite is the custom VX800. I would choose an SRX over a stock VMax 4 though.
