well guys i went to the u.p thursday night and got up to ride friday morning and my viper started right up and ran like champ. we went about 15 miles and i was going about 45 m.p.h when it died. i pulled it over and it pulled hard but started and i went about 20 yards and it died again and is locked up. we towed it back to the cafe and while i was waiting for my buddy to pick me up it freed up again but now it is locked.it only had 2500 miles and was very well taken care of. what do you guys think went wrong. i am going to tear it down tonight and find out whether i am going to part it out or fix it. i am so bummed out.

Probably a crank bearing but you wont know for sure until you tear into it. Was it always fogged properly?

crank bearing was a guess. top end is tore down and everything is good. Crank bearing i believe is the culprit now

That's too bad, especially, with your low miles. Keep us posted. I probably will not get my motor out and case split for a couple weeks. Good luck! Brett

Hey Viper King, I think I talked to you on the phone about my viper, it blew up also and I was thinking about parting or selling it as is. Mine did the same thing though and the rod bearing went also. No clue why yet, always ran great and I had it way over jetted. I've had people tell me bad bearing, ice in the carb and caused piston to seize and in turn take the bearing..... I don't know myself. Piston top looks good, a little scoring, would really like some input on the same thing though. Middle cylinder went on mine. Yep, makes your stomach twist doesn't it! Hopefully yamahas bearings are tougher than that!

Boy this is weard with all these vipers going down to bearing problems,
what are there oil pumps set at for these? i've always heard they sip oil,
maybe hop up the oil usage on them????

I did a complete top end rebuild this summer 3000 miles on engine, crank seemed to be fine, got 100 miles then the stator side con bearing cage let go,took out the crank, piston, and my newly ported clyinder, still waiting for crank and case from a srx to come in,I did fog every year.It just seems strange that all of a sudden there seems to be alot of crank failures.

They aren't exactly spring chickens any more.

Yea but going down at 2500 miles??? or more, that ain't like yamaha.

hell our old iron is still kick'en it with WAY more miles and alot older...

GoneBlue and ViperKing sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Reading about all these burndowns is making me kinda sketchy on even starting my sled for the first time with the pipes and new rings.......... NO JOKE!!!

Setting my oil pump at 22mm running AMSOIL, heard you can lean it out a LITTLE bit when running better oil but I'm not taking any chances.

just out of curriousity what oils where you guys running and what mods.

I think the vipers donty get anough oil, my oil line was leaking on a ride so i added a litter to my gas 35:1 in the gas and by the time i got back i still had oil in the resivior so i was running premix and still gettting the regular injected oil, and it seemed to run fine a little bit less crisp. that was about 500miles ago never changed my plugs and there fine.

funny thing about it was i pulled my carbs after to clean them figuring they would be dirty/ gummy and the where the cleanest ive ever seen. I think the premix cleaned them good (i hadn't cleaned them yet this season)

I don't blame you, leave it there or kick it up to 20mm.

no mods on my viper. completely stock except for cosmetic things. do you think i should set the oil a little richer when i get it fixed

You know you didn't hear about crank problems back in the day with
the older iron, just that they used to much oil, i'd say that was good thing
then.

If i had a vipe i definitely would be hop'en up the pump..
