TURK/MRVIPER..re: clutching on 2002 SRX

Glad to hear the SRX is running strong again. : )

My only frustration is I was hoping to learn from your ordeal a little bit and becuase you changed to a new belt, difference secondary spring, and different helix, its hard to diagnose what the actual problem was for you. It may have just been the belt, and maybe it would pull even harder with the 51-43 helx back in there. You'll have to try that swap in helixes again to know for sure.

Im heading up to Maine tonight and will try swapping my 48-40 adavtange helix for the orginal stock 47 and will let you know my impressions in the next day or so.

my other belt was still good,just had a new one here so decided to put it on.Turk told me to use 48/40.I don't have one so I asked him if i could use my 47.He said it would be better.It has controlled my rpm's better and not over-reving at top end.He said the 51/43 was to shallow.Not really sure how it all works.But I am surprised at the difference it made.Maybe 48/40 would still be better...I don't know.It all comes down to testing I guess and spare bucks to spend.Between 2 sleds I have spent $1000.00's of dollars to get things right.In the good old days we didn't do anything like that.We just started them up and rode off into the sunset.I am gone out for another ride.Talk to ya's later.

so i guess i will park my 51-43 dalton and try back my 47 but i'm sure it will not be better .. i'm a little lost here too
 
srx clutching

Hey guys.
Just got back from a ride with the 02 srx and just wanted to give you an update on my latest clutching experience. Last week, with setup below,I was overreving to 8700, maybe 8800. Today, in hard pack and loose conditions, my sled would rev right to 8500 and stay riight there. Felt pretty darN strong, though I would like to see it rev a little lower initially, maybe 8300 and build up to 8500. So far, I kept my changes pretty simple from last week's setup:
CHANGES:
- new belt (scuffed it up as well)
- cleaned and scuffed clutches

Current setup
advantage edge 48-40
red sec. spring. 70 deg,
white-white-white primary
8dn-20 4.5 grs, both holes


I hope to try a couple other helixes tomorrow, will let you know what I find out.

I see a large discrepency in what srx,s will pull for clutching.
 
same set-up I have otis,except I run the 47 helix with red spring.Launch to 8500 and drops back to 8200 quickly and pulls like a S.O.B to 8500 and remains there.Boy what a great feeling,the speedometer keeps climbing past the 100mph mark easily.To stop my slight launch over-rev,because maybe clutches are shifting faster then the motor can rev up,the rpm drops back to 8200 and then then motor really catches up and then it pulls hard.To solve this I think I need a stiffer secondary spring.Will try the green instead of the red,wrap at 80 or maybe 70 even.
Turk I tried what to said,green spring wound to 60.Didn't notice to much difference.Still over-reved at launch,but I think I could smell rubber,so the belt must be slipping a tad.Clutches were still cool to touch,nothing hot about them.Could you explain to me how that 48/40 would help?

that about sums up my position too as I try to understand all this and my own clutch iterations...

so.... if ( a guy I know :o) can pull 8500 with added heel (4.5g) AND tip weight (5.5g) AND a 51/43 helix on top of that -
that should be a good thing right?

in other words, going back to 4.5g tip and 48/40 or 47 shouldn't help me shift faster ( ie accellerate faster )....correct??????

i will continue with my testing , but if this desktop dyno (or is it techboard wrenching) saves time , all the better :rocks:

assuming the 43 was shallow, the stock 47 will keep from overrevign on top end...right?

so therefore-
it seems to me that a 51/47...would be a good combo of fast initial shift, and no reduction in shift on top , thus preventing over rev on top end
?????

Too bad Mi, MA, Manitoba, etc are so far apart. It would be fun to all hook up for an "SRX party" to try different setups all at one time. If we could get MrViper and Turk there we'd be all set. Michigan is in the middle...
 
Clutching

Hey guys.

I did go riding today, but made no more changes today as I was too anxious to get out on the trails as they were all groomed last night and I was the first one on them. : )

I did check my clutch temps after several hard acceleration runs and they both felt equally warm-not hot compred to last week with the "glazed" belt when the primary was quite hot. I am leaning towards putting a 5.5 bolt/nut in the inner hole as Id rather get my initial revs down this way rather than with the secondary.

Just to let you, with the current setup, and a new belt early last year, my top end on GPS on railbed was 106 and I consistently take my bud's 2005 800HO from a rolling start right to top end so its a strng setup. I havent raced him from a dead stop and wouldnt dare race him or any of my buds in loose snow again with the current stock track...........
 
well I took out the 4.5g rivets in heel and put new 4.5g rivets in with a washer with each of them.Tried a few runs today.Still over -revs at launch to 8400,but drops instantly to 8200 again and then climbs to 8500.This is with the 47 helix wrapped at 80.So i washer didn't do to much here.SO is 48/40 the way to go with 4.5g in both holes.Or is there a better combo.The 51/43 gives over revs at launch and wot.
 
well I ordered more 4.5g rivets and picked up some 1 g washer and bought a gram scale.Will use 4.5g+ 1g washer in heel and 4.5g + 2-1g washers in outer holes.Will go back to my 51/43 Helix with green spring and see what gives.Got to get rid of over reving.Will experiment with red spring also and 70-80 wraps.Will get my 4.5g rivets Thursday or Friday at the soonest.
Just got out my old weights from the SXR with rivets installed and weighed them.2 of them were 44 grams and 1 was 43 grams.Just a tad out for an example.

I am having fun with this gram scale.I love new toys.LOL I have 206 g of Pepsi left in the can....wait...now I have 172 g of Pepsi now. Ahhhh that went down good.My wife made me some popcorn ..so now typing this with buttery fingers....LOL...making myself laugh here.
 
well I just picked it up at our local hardware store (Canadian Tire).It cost me a cool $50.00.Runs on lithium battery.Goes from grams to ounces,kilograms or pounds.It is rather a cool piece of equipment.
