SRX 1108 Race Sled Buildup

Here's the mess.

In the first picture, you can see the two holes in the case from the inside. The long slot is not all the way through for most of it. You can see how much it actually came through in the next photo.

In the last picture, you can see the crack right across the lobe, and the missing chunk of weld on the left side. Lovely, isn't it?

Hey Valin,

What did you end up doing with the reeds. I was looking to mod some skidoo reeds in my price srx 1000 motor, thinking it would help out with the surface area. I was just curious to see what you had done. Also i was telling you that we were putting an msd ignition in our srx. Just so you know we did and it works awesome. We haven't had one ignition problem since we did. Check this video out. Our last run of the season. The iice was real soft but we still did pretty good. Nice, Mark. I ended up switching back to Delta 2's. The 3's just don't hold up.

I would like to see some flowbench numbers with those skidoo reedblocks and the yamaha reedblocks. I'm not sure that there is enough case volume to require a larger reedblock, but I'd sure like to know if it will flow more. Let me know how you make out if you do decide to go this route.
 
Hey Valin, any new updates for the 2010 season on the SRX??? We are going to try to make it up to a NBSSR speed run in early March with my Turbo Vmax-4 pending on their schedule of races. I think some of the NSSR guys here in the states are trying to get a group together to come up at once and compete.
 
That would be great Justin. I'd like to see what that 4 cylinder can do in 2000'. It would also be great to see some new sleds out. Keep me posted and let me know if you are coming up for sure!

My bottom end is down at Iantomasi at the moment. They are fixing the crank and cases for me. They also have my cylinders. The exh. port timing on that motor was only 189 deg., and the transfers were far too low also. Too low even for the current exhaust port. There's probably quite a bit more power to be had out of this motor. I am hoping for 280's. We'll see....
 
Thats a real bummer for the problems you encountered last season, especially after all the work you put into the build. Trust me I can share your frustrations from some of my first years r&d-ing my turbo sled, like to just forget those days. That is an awesome looking sled and very clean build, hopefully, 2010 will be more kinder and let you hit that 160 mark in the 2000' strip!

Think I will push for coming up in early March after my NSSR schedule is complete, looking forward to meeting some of the fellow racers up north!
 
The engine has been repaired. We found alot of issues with the porting, and some of them were major. The motor shouldn't have even run. This has all been addressed. The cylinders had to be shimmed 98 thou to fix the transfer port issues on the PTO cylinder, which was roughly 100 thou higher than the other cylinders. The exhaust ports also had to be raised slightly still, even with the 98 thou raise, which now brings my exhaust duration to 202 degrees. Yes, it was damn low. It is now ported to where it should be, and some angles have been changed slightly. I am changing pistons to single ring 800 skidoo piston, and getting rid of the L-Ring watercraft pistons I was running because I was having issues with the top ring not sealing properly, throwing the already messed up port timing out even further.

With all that was found, it was not surprising that the motor was laying down at roughly the 800' mark. It made 263hp on the dyno previously, and after finding all of this, it is amazing it made anywhere near that number. It certainly wouldn't have made 260 for very long. We figure it should be in the 290hp range this season, and continue to make good power all the way down the track. It should come out as a weapon this year :) I'm pretty excited :)

Mark Herek of Herek Motorsports build the motor initially. I took the cylinders down to Gerry Iantomasi earlier in the year to see what he thought about raising the ports. He is the one who found the rest.

I doubt that we will be heading down to see Jim in the near future. I am on a labour strike at work, so I have to watch my spending.

How is your 900 project coming along?
