nitrous

actually I gotta side with Gary on this, there's no substitute in the world for doing your homework, and if a couple hours to read a book and $20 to spend on it is too large a sacrifice, you really shouldn't be messing with it.

on the topic of books to read before messing with stuff, Aaens book on clutching definitely gets my stamp of approval. It should be recommended reading before running to ask Turk for a set-up.

Guys!
What Gary suggested is very good idea! Let's put this book to travel around the word that everyone who are interested about nitrous can spend some time and learn more about this.
I will sign this book that Gary has bought and send it to next willing person.

Reimond.

Sign me up too. I will add this though, my airbox kit adds 800 rpms on my Apex. I'm sure you can build a homemade kit that adds more power, but it would be worthless on the trail because you couldn't comprimise enough for the nitrous and still keep good enough rpms without. For racing sleds I couldn't agree with you more Gary, but for trail sleds the totally safe airbox kits can give you as much power as you can clutch for, so how can they be bad in that application?

Eric you hit the nail on the head there. For racing bulding your own kit works great and and has more hp vs some kits but not all kit's.Foe example you build your own kit using nos parts say for a 60hpShot and it's a true hp shot. The boss is very on on there #'s say a boss 60 hp shot, which I prefer to run in the carb bootsOn the dyno they botth make the same power. On the track you can warm your bottle well on the trail when you get to the lake and your sled has been sitting a nd you go to start it up and race some one the boss system will be more consistant it works the same on a cold bottle or warm bottle you need no bottle heater.Well the nos home made kit requires a certain tempature to utilize the kit to the maxximum so there for it's not as consistant.Thsi si what we are try to get across for the trailguys that use it once and a whil it's alot less trouble you install it fine toon your fuel screw which takes about 3 runs and you never have to adjust anything ever again. With a 60hp boss shot there is a 800rpm inrease.I know what gary is aying some other companies claim this hp and it's not getting it but there are some out there that are the true hp.So a system like I mention doisen't make your own nos system any better.

Thats one of the pitfalls of nitrous, any more than 800 rpms and its gonna be a total dog off the bottle or reving useless on the bottle. Even with an 800 rpm difference you are at a clutching compromise on and off the juice on a trail sled that needs good performance in a wide range of situations. I've heard that the new boondocker kits are hitting their advertised power on the dyno too. That being said an 800rpm shot is alot of fun when the trail opens up, I've shut alot of Mach Z and F-1000 owners up this year, lol.

MAYBE you got a good point EJCAMARO,,, I never liked the "airbox" nitrous kits and I never liked the "regulated to 300" kits either because the WHOLE PERFECTED theory has been thrown out the window.... Mike Thermos (the GURU) of NOS SYSTEMS spent a LOT OF YEARS fighting TOOTH AND NAIL with MULTI MILLIONAIRES trying to PERFECT the induction of NITROUS OXIDE in an AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATION (or snowmobile, for that matter).. The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has figured this stuff out 70 YEARS AGO!!! LIKE THOSE PERSONAL FLIGHT PACS that you could STRAP on your back and FLY around the neighborhood,,,, the GOVT didn't want people to get their hands on them NEEDLESS to say,,, when POPULAR SCIENCE came out with the PLANS to build your own FLIGHT PACS,,,,,, The GOVT STOPPED sales of the magazine!!!! (true story)... I SAW and READ the article because one of my friends RECEIVED the MAGAZINE through a subscription and I REALLY DID think about building one of those!!!!! THAT WAS MORE THAN 20 YEArS AGO!!!! I don't know if its just BEEN A WHILE since I've went to school,,,, but I KNOW what works and what doesnt!!!

Ok, Should we put somekind of list somewhere? MrSled, help?
So was MrSled first who wanted this Book?

I just yesterday watched a Boondocker NOS kit that sprays into the air box and it picked up 160hp! They are going to try adding more nozzles and pick up another 40hp soon and then they will have topped the 400hp mark with a twin cylinder sled!

you would think the guy who wanted to know about the nitrous systems would also like the "book" to read,,, but,,, you can lead a horse to water,,,but,,, you can't make him drink!!! ( you CAN get him REALLY thirsty though)... I suppose as long as everyone knows the book is available,, just hold onto it REIMOND until someone asks for it.... Mr sled and EJcamaro BOTH wanted the book,,,so let them SEND their mailing address to you (maybe through PM??) Gary Oles nosboy

Hey SRXSPEC??? is that a BOONDOCKER KIT that is available to the general public???? A lot of those "so called KITS" are just one of the employees or the owner PLAYING with a nitrous system that is NOT FOR SALE to the general public!!!.. You have to do a WORLD of things to a sled motor to try and get another 160HP out of it!!! MORESO that just installing a "KIT" on it!!! The "STOCK" motor will probably handle 15HP per cylinder with a STOCK setup.. THATS about it!!!! Any more than 15HP per cylinder and you have to do some EXPENSIVE MODIFICATIONS!!! at 140HP i HIGHLY DOUBT that there are too many "stock" parts LEFT ON THAT MOTOR!!! So,, whem these guys advertise 140HP out of a 2 stroke SLED MOTOR,, they probably have 5 GRAND of MODS to the motor BEFORE the NITROUS!!!! It sure LOOKS interesting,, doesn't it????

Gary, the motor was 203 hp on premium pump gas fuel. They put straight VP C16 in and threw the NOS at it and made 363 hp. The sled has run 8.56 @ 158 mph in the 1/4 mile at Union Grove in WI! Wiseco pistons (it's a big bore) but otherwise a STOCK motor configuration (crank, rods, etc is all stock). Yes it is a Boondocker kit that is available to the generally public!

You need that kit Allen!!! You could make some turbo guys cry.

Gary I pm'd my address to Reimond. I'm building a race only mod 440 and figure I'll give your way a shot, even though I doubt I'll be giving it that big of a hit (none at first).

KEEP AWAY from systems that DO NOT use a BOTTLE HEATER and KEEP AWAY from systems that spray into the airbox!!! Thats about the TWO DUMBEST things on the market today... INTAKE PORT INJECTION (or spraying) is about the EASIEST and drilling and tapping into the block is the BEST WAY of doing it,,,but,,,theres guys (who sell their own systems) that want to argue with me... In order for NITROUS to do its thing (accelerate combustion) you HAVE TO HAVE a certain enviornment for NITROUS to do it's thing!!! TOO MUCH (or not the right type) FUEL or too much (or too little) nitrous pressure and TEMPERATURE (also liquid or vaporized state) have MUCH to do with the proper operation of a nitrous system ... A NITROUS system that sprays NITROUS ONLY into the airbox is ABSOLUTELY FLIPPING STUPID!!!! I could buy a $20.00 gallon of a "household chemical" (that you could buy EVERYDAY at HOME DEPOT) and produce MORE HORSEPOWER that "STUPID'S" system that blows nitrous into the airbox!!!! You DON'T have to buy the nitrous system from "stupid" and MY WAY (the 20.00 a gallon way) would only cost you around TEN DOLLARS in PARTS!!!! NO FILLING nitrous bottles and NO CHANGING nitrous bottles.,,,,,,, just an EXTRA 20.00 everytime you fill the sled up!!! A PROPERLY DESIGNED nitrous system will work JUST FINE and you will NOT BE WASTING nitrous OR high octane fuel like the "other systems" will!!!!! Take my word,,,, I've BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT!!!!

Hmmm, I am going to lunch..but will read furthur than this post afterwards....

Let me ask NOSBOY...have you ever used a Holtzman kit? Funny, it sprays a fog into the airbox...have you ever seen this fog and how much nitrous is actually being sprayed??!!!!!! It will shoot a fog 6 FEET from the sled.

My Apex gained (on GPS) 20mph in less than 2000 feet on SLUSH from 99mph on the motor to 118.6mph with nitrous. This was with a HALF full bottle at -25c with frost all over it. First nitrous run was 113.4mph with the track ratcheting at over 100mph.

Sometimes it's just better to not argue about this stuff. Results speak for themselves...
20mph gain vid
127.9 mph

HOLTZMAN WORKS, customer service is great too.
Lots of fun info on my thread on 4 stroke forums in which it's the same general idea for 2 strokes other than the fuel supply....

hmm, take a look at my nice frosty bottle...it was in the machine overnight at -28c. When the pic was taken the outside temp was around -13c. I gained 20mph with nitrous that day!!! No need for a bottle heater!! HOLTZMAN!!

I am by no means a expert but i think there is a differance in a guy putting a kit on his every day trail \lake\mountain sled and not wanting to clutch for a big boost and someone clutching for full race and wanting every bit of horsepower and rpms that he can derive from it.

This is a good statement. That is why Boondockers and Holtzman kits are great for trail sleds that wanna smoke their buddies on the lake!

Both of these kits work great on 2 strokes also (thought I better add that!!).
