viper motor locked solid

well looks like #2 cylinder bit the dust. the bad part is i removed the pistons and turned the crank and its a little gritty and i look down in the case and there is crap down in the bottom. so now at this point im wondering if its worth more in parts or to fix it. i still have to fix the tunnel after getting hit last year.

the only thing is we really didnt determine what failed here other than riding in that midrange of 30 to 45mph alot that day.

I would have to say it was definitely running lean since the exhaust side of the piston is missing a huge chunk. Does the crank turn over hard by hand like the bearings are ruined? The constant pounding from the detonation might have ruined a bearing or the rod too.

That sucks, I help you clean the PV's and then it burns down(on what I assume is it's first ride of the year). I must be bad luck. :o|

I'll call you tomorrow on my way home to pick up the stands.

YOur going to have to take out the crank and check it out, most of the time there is crank damage when you burn down a piston.... it will cost more to get a crank and piston, better off finding a new or used motor.... New short blocks aren't cheap.

yeah im just wondering why it when lean on just that cylinder. tough call here. ive got it tore down pretty far not much more to take off to pull out motor. i turn wrenches for a living so as far as rebuilding it prolly wouldnt be a big deal. other than the cost of parts verus new or used motor

i should be able to spin that motor pretty easy and yep it takes some arm to turn it :o|

Lady driven and held at a 30-40 mph area? If so bring your piston I will add it to the "wive's collection" of Viper pistons I have from women riding 30-40 mph constant speed out in the Black Hills! To really tell if the motor spins over freely remove the recoil and take the flywheel off and then spin it (so you don't have any possible resistance from the flywheel magnets, etc pulling on it).

woofer, what were you doin lookin at campers in February? You've got all spring to do that! We coulda used another hand putting in Fasttoys bushing kit!

;)!

A cup of oil in 60 miles, sounds like the problem right there. I bet the crank rod bearing is siezed due to an oiling problem. Did you change oil brands,or run it out of oil and not rebleed it? When you did the carbs you might of accidentilly done something to the oil controll cable. Good Luck.

Just wondering, why would it matter if you change oil brands?

Taking the motor out for now

so today i decide i will at least take the motor out and rebuild it dont know if im gonna part out the whole sled or not. so i took of the primary and the recoil off. man taking that primary off put me on my a**, need alot of "torque"to get that thing off. I even put some grease in it! better bring the big guns :bash:

Hey just to let you know this same thing happened to me and it was an engine bearing in the middle right side. There's only one way to find out for sure though......Tear it down....Good Luck

My Wife and I were in the Hills on the first weekend of March w/ another couple. Point of story I have another cylinder and piston to add to your "wives collection". Why are these burning up and what can I do to prevent it in future?

Keep a better eye on mid range jetting, clean carbs often and use better
fuel

The Carbs were re jetted for the Black Hills of South Dakota and cleaned just prior to Trip and I use premium Fuel. SRXSPEC had stated he had collection of these viper pistons that were driven by wives at 30-40 mphs that had blown up in the Black Hills. So my question is in regards to that geographical region. I would also add that it was in the high 40 s temp wise therefore the motor should have been running rich not lean. I will also say that I jetted according to the yamaha dealer recomendations and that we have made several trips to the Black HIlls of South Dakota with this jetting combination and the sled always ran great.
