y srx hard to start and not vipers

my srx is a real bear to start unless you pour a little gas down each cylinder and than she fires right up, what is so different on a viper that they dont have that problem? i understand the basics pipes are different 3-1 yadda yadda yadda, i gues i want to know what i can do to get my srx to start easier like a viper does
 
Many people seem to be experiening this problem with their SRX's. My carbs are as clean as you can get them and I'm still finding it difficult to start. I have a 00 now but my older 98 never had this issue. I think it might be the "nature of the beast". One thing I didn't look at though is the fuel pump. Its almost as if the carbs are always emtpy of fuel and your trying to prime the gas through to fill the carbs.
 
I'v had two srx's, one brand spanking new, hard to start like over 20 pulls after two weeks, the second I still have, same thing 2001 the both of them............
 
almost as if the fuel empties from the line, and needs to be sucked up pull by pull from the tank........

You didn't say when this happens. Is it after a long soak (more than a month) or over night?

If it's over night I'd suggest looking at the pilots and choke plungers. Or perhaps leaking needle/seat causing flooding during hot soak. But having to add fuel would suggest the former.

If it's after a few weeks than based on what I've read, it's kind of the nature of the beast. After summer start up is the only time I have a problem with my '01 but I plan to try and cycle the pump via rocking the primary back and forth to fill the bowls this fall. The usual way has been to fill the tank, dump premix in the cylinders (usually twice) and pull three times.

Sad to say I've had to leave it sit for more than a few weeks during the season but have never had a problem with restart. Even after a month - full choke, three pulls max and it's lit.
 
with my 01, you can almost predict the temperature by the number of pulls. At around zero, three pulls and your off after overnite sit. At minus 10 C, 15 pulls, -20C, over 20 pulls..... etc...........so very much temperature related even after sitting over nite after a nice long ride ??
 
now I actually put a light bulb under the hood wrapped up in a blanket to start her on cold mornings.....
 
~ cold starts~No more than 12 on coldest day,, first three slow ones don't count,, *with gas to carbs*-- 5-6 full pulls at 0 three pulls 49deg on up,,. down to two at 63deg & beyond,..
 
I must be lucky with my ol girl.
It has been sitting for 4 weeks under its cover and had to move it yesterday..
FIRST pull fired right up.
Most ever have to pull is three/four times. After sitting all summer usually takes a little gas in the cyls to start. Once this this is done, never have any starting issues.
Knock on wood! LOL!

Cheap block heater. Some of my Ski-Doo buddies have used it with success.

Maybe I shouldn't point out that they are wrinkled and retired. ;>)

Maybe Mopar is on to something regarding the pilots but like I said, I haven't had much of problem with my '01.
 
I have a 00' and its a bugger to get going on cold days. I also have a lean high idle. My pilot jets are out 2 turns so I thought about going to larger pilots.

Wow you are lucky the sled has not caught fire.
 
2 things to try:

1. Kill the engine by choking it out. It will start a lot easier next day. Don't do this if the sled won't be run for awhile as it might wash the oil off the cyl walls.
2. Put in a fuel shutoff valve. shut the fuel off as soon as the engine is off. This will hold fuel in the line.
 
Check the adjustment of your choke cable. Make sure the choke jets open all the way. Seen it make a world of differnece on several sleds.
My SRX takes about 6 pulls after sitting for a month. 1 to 3 pulls after it's been run. Son's SX-R 600 used to be hard to start and foul plugs a lot. Finally figured out to adjust the choke cable and all the troubles went away. It will start with one pull most of the time even after sitting for a while.
Low conpression can also make a 2 stroke tough to get started. You may want to check that too. Should be around 120psi.
