My Problem Machine - SRX

Topgunnsrx - I have pulled the entire wiring harness as shown in the pictures. I took all the tape off the wiring harness and wiring looms. The wiring looked like new. I noticed small rub marks in the tape but nothing on the wires. I went over it with a fine tooth comb. I have re wrapped all wiring in 3 layers of 3m electrical tape and relocated the wiring over the recoil and under the front of the engine, there are two factory hold downs located in the front I used to secure it and two more where it came back up on the right side.

It is an 01' SRX 700 bored .50. Correct when I pull the engine over I noticed my head light does not light up. I believe it use to, but I could be wrong. I know my MM does light up when I pull start it.

Thought for sure the harnees would reveal something. Have you looked at the harness going up to and at the bars? Or the left side ("driver's side") knee area where all the relays and such are? Try moving harnesses and unplugging stuff while looking for spark. Make sure you have a good ground path for the high tention leads to avoid causing another problem (burning a coil - that 20kv has to go somewhere). In other words, attach the spark plugs and let them ground to the block/head.

The headlight on my '01 SRX does NOT light until the engine starts. Like I said before, there was an updated relay which I thought was for the headlight delay but I don't know what the symptom the outdated relay caused.

Definate head scratcher... you're missing something and it's probably something simple... or not ;>)

The SRX uses a relay, so all the power goes the the coils. Once the engine produces enough of its own power, the relays kick over, and start the headlights.

I believe there is another problem area under the fuel tank where the wires rub through, though I can't re-call the common syptoms of this one, if it's just lighting or includes ignition.

Well it sounds like you are quite mechanically inclined, but I'd take it to the dealer and have them check out your spark problem. Should only take a half hour of labor charge to find the problem. I bet you still have a stator issue.... Good luck..

While sitting on the machine remove right louver panel (knee area) & look
at the items behind there. I had the same problem. Lost all spark. It turned
out to be a wire that came loose. Re-connected wire & wire tied it so it would
not happen again.

NO WAY, dont give up!!

I thought the same last year when I was trying everything to figure out why I kept losing PV's.....had to remove the entire harness and all, but eventually found it....

Will be so satisfying when u figure it out...keep yer chin up

Just saw a post by iowasrx about his harness and a short he found near the hood opening. This is the first I had seen someone find something in this area... may be worth looking at.

I put everything back together and tried to start it just for shits and giggles no results and no spark. I am starting to pull the cover & recoil to see if anything was pinched or screwed up. It will be about an hour and a half before I can finish that. I just put dinner on, I am baby sitting my little brothers tonight.

In the mean time I am also putting a new gear and chain on the RMK. Last winter my gf was driving it and the lower gear shattered and mangled the chain. I used the MM to pull it off the trail (3 miles) damn track was locked up solid. I have always loved my Yamahas. Lots of power and lots of torque. We have other Polaris sleds mostly Indy's ranging between 94 and 2001, most are 500's and one is an 800. So enough venting for now. So on an end note this isn't a fun job either but it is getting my mind off the Yamaha.

I appreciate all the help so far. I will update you when I get a chance. If I can not figure it out in the next week I am going to call Joe Haack out in North Branch he was referred to me as a Yamaha Specialist.

It went to North Branch, Haak Enterprises has it. He said he would look it over and figure it out. I should have an answer within 2 weeks. Initially he was stumped as well. We will see what happens. Thanks everyone for your help. I will keep everyone informed so you know what to look for as well.

I picked it up from North Branch last month and it was running. Joe and his brother explained it was a problem with the pickup, the same part I had replaced by RM Stator. After carefully looking at the two pickups we realized there was nothing wrong with it but it was the wrong pickup all together. So I brought the snowmobile home and it sat for a week before I got to take it out. It was running when I brought it home. Joe rebuilt the carbs and rewrapped the entire wiring harness when he was hunting for the issue. I took it out with my girlfriend and it was riding really well, quick on the response. Left most sleds in the dust. 45 minutes later it started to miss, I changed out the plugs but it was still missing so I started to limp it home. A mile and a half from home it shut off on the trail and has no spark again. It has been sitting ever since, I am debating parting it out. It has a ton of money stuck into it and it always seems to have something wrong.

$2000 for the sled
$150 for the pistons and rings
$225 per cyl to have them bored and replated
$500 to have the engine rebuilt (seals, bearings and gaskets, exhaust gaskets)
$70 to diagnose no spark.
$75 to RM Stator to replace pickup.
$300 to Haack to replace pickup/diagnose/rebuild carbs.
$600 New 144 skid (2001 MM, totally rebuilt) and track (New) that I never installed.

So I am back riding my 98 Polaris that I have never done any major repairs to, feeling it is time to part the Yamaha out. I have 45 minutes of run time on a rebuilt engine with high octane fuel. I guess I had big dreams.

A quick note to those who think about using Joe Haack (Haack Enterprises) as a mechanic.
I had a lot of difficulty working with him. He does exceptional work, he has 20 or 30 sleds in his shop all the time. However he works for the county as a snow plow driver. His snowmobile repair business is done in his spare time. He does not respond to emails and a lot of time he does not respond to phone calls unless it pertains to money. I tried to contact him after it quit running and he never responded. I left a message for him on his wifes phone and his phone and sent an email to him explaining what had happened looking for a little bit of guidance on where to look for the problem, not even asking him to warranty the work he did and I have heard nothing back. I have the sled up in Gaylord, MI now and don't plan to take it back to him if he was to ever respond. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive to North Branch. So this is my review of Haack Enterprises and my experience working with him.

My advise would be to find another mechanic. Please note I am not writing this to bash Haack Enterprises just to give people an idea of the experience I have had so you do not have to deal with it down the road.

sounds like you need to buy a F'in stator!! or a used one and put it in there and take your old one and throw it through the front window of RM stator!!!

That sucks,

if you were closer to me, I would offer to help. He!!, if you want to take it to Duluth, MN or MPLS, MN, I will work on it and garauntee my work.
