belt sits to low in the secondary

I just got an 02 viper and there is a squeel from the belt. I changed the belt (8 DN). Still squeels. Checked C to C and its good at 10 5/8". Checked offsett. Still Squeels. Took the secondary off and cleaned everything. Took out the shims, still squeels. Now what I really dont get is the belt is sitting 3/8" below the top of the secondary. I know its suppose to sit 1/16 above. Its off 7/16ths. What am I missing? The sled has 2600 miles on it.

The primary opens all the way and engages properly at 3900 to 4000 RPM's. The entire sled is stock so I can't see anyone shimming the primary. Matter of fact I bought this from my father in law and he was lucky he could fill it up with gas without help.
 
Correct me if i'm wrong, but when you change your belt to a brand new one, i believe you are supposed to remove the 3 bolts on the back side of the secondary and add a shim to each so it compensates for the wider belt. However, if yours is sitting too low, maybe you need to remove the shims that are still back there?!?

Just a thought...

this is my understanding also.....

I believe the shims (adding them) compensate for the belt wearing and getting thinner as it wears...

Taphee: Maybe your secondary spring is wearing and you need a new one, with spring forces back in spec?

exactly correct, think they are either an 8mm or a 10mm nut
 
I took the shims out and it didnt make a difference. Spring wear may be it. I can change the belt by hand very easy. My SXR is is a real PITA.
 
taking the shims out allows the bolts to go in farther and open the clutch. with the shim in the bolts dont go through as far and the clutch closes up more, forcing the belt up. that help??
 
That does sound logical. I did a search for squeeling belts and they all say take the washers out with a new belt. I have one washer in there now. I will add another one or two and see what happens. Thank you I appreciate the help
 
That would be going backwards. The farther in the bolts go, the more they hold the secondary open and seat the belt lower. The less they go in, the higher it rides and tighter it pulls against the primary.
Removing washers will lower/loosen the belt. Adding them will raise/tighten the belt.
 
I thought he was having problems with his belt squeeling with the shims out.. I guess i missed the part about it sitting too low.



for what its worth my belt has never sat above the sec. sheave. I know everyone thinks its suppossed too but mine has never ben dar.....It runs increadibly well!

Yep, it is squeeling with one shim in and with the one shim out. But it the belt is sitting way to low. I will add one or two shims tonight and see if that helps. I have never had a belt sit this low in the secondary. I'll try to add a pic or two as well.
 
Did someone take the secondary apart and not twist the spring correctly when re-assembling? Also, make sure to ride it around or spin the track on stand to make sure the belt goes to where it wants to sit in the secondary...
 
Okay, the additional shims didn't do much. I have been playing with the pics trying to get them to post. I will keep trying. I sent the pics in an email to you.

to solve the squeel you will need to take shims out to open the secondary more and loosen the belt........ but if the belt is that deep in the secondary already, I would find someone close to you with alignment tools there has to be an alignment issue check the motor mounts!!!

Have you checked your motor mounts???

try to wiggle the motor by hand vigorously...... you shouldn't really be able to move it much by hand......

just trying to take a different approach..... hope it helps!!!
