89 Exciter Transformation!

I ran the machine on the stand with a couple different settings... I find the MAG side runs leaner, so I put a 45 pilot. The PTO side runs rich so it stays with the 42.5 . I went out riding with 340 mains and although it runs better, it only does about 70, and WOT is only slightly better than running 320 mains. Im going to try 330 mains next.
 
yeah i think u should be pretty close with them, but i would also recommend flatslides now that i know it works:) it´s a big difference compared to the round throttles in a positive way. But the fuel consumption might be a bit higher, but that´s under testing right now:)
 
Now I have the 330 Mains in and it sounds really snappy! I'll be testing it tmrw in some fields.
I also inspected my rear suspension and found a missing nut! So I replaced it with a ny-lock, and put some loktite.

flatslides are the way to go on these sleds.. my 87 has exciter sx carbs and psi pipe and it runs awesome! i have had alot of experience with these sleds...this sled i have now is the second 87 that i have owned.. the first was stock at first but i ported the cylinders to update porting.. which was what the sx specs ended up being along with psi pipe , but what really woke this sled up was 95 vmax600 primary/secondary clutches! which eventually i will do to the current sled.. my fuel mileage with the flatslides is 15 mpg, you need the carbs,sx intake manifolds,throttle lever/cable from the sx or the 95/96 vmax 500/600 levers are the same but you have to change the internals to the carbs though..too rich of a setup and costly to purchase all the internals.the result is instant excelleration with the flatslides.also by using the flatslides you wont stand the chance of the dreaded seizure that the roundslide carbs experienced because the weight of carbs are different as they are tied together with the carb rail.. good thread and sled by the way!
 
Good info ramblnman, I appreciate the info!! Seems like these sleds have alot to do to them to make them perform well. I saw the sx porting doc, and the next time I rip off my cylinders, they'll go back to my porter for an update!

I'll see about getting flatsides but for now I want to try and make the round slides work and worry about it next year.

What is so different about th 95 vmax clutches? And would I need the driven shaft too?
 
sounds like youre making good progress on those carbs stanage,i wouldnt worry to much about flatsides, if i had any better throttle response my sled would be able to read my mind,the reason they used em was for lighter throttle pull which gave the sled a lighter feel,ive owned three exciters all psi piped even duals on my 90 which went over 10000 miles,no burndowns,they are easier to tune because of not havin two throttle cables and they look badass,as far as clutches the driven is the one thats most important because of the outside mounted helix,also uses wide belt,keep tuning those roundslides and itll come together just fine
 
no worries! just wanted to chime in with some positive experiences..i love these sleds!!no you dont need different jackshaft, the clutches simply are made to tighter tolerances, better rollers and far more efficient and superior..O.D designed in for more efficiency over the ypz clutches, now about the flatslide vs roundslide... dcs..it was much more than just an easier pull.. yamaha was and still is the leader in technology in the snowmobile industry as well as atv/motorcycle and the list goes on but it was very competitive between manafacturers to lead.. the development of the flatslides started with motocross which as you may know motocross engines need instant acceleration as well as topend to be competitive.. that is why you dont see roundslides on them anymore.. flatslides are far superior! with that said the shorter slide allows the vacuum to increase the negative signal to the needle jet circuit which pulls the fuel in to the air stream and atomizes the fuel more efficiently.. this is also where the fuel economy comes into play(if you are not to the bar all the time) LOL.. i hope this sheds some light on flatslides just passing along the positive experience i have learned in the industry over the past 30 years in snowmobiling and working at a few yamaha dealerships... and even have the flow advantage in drag racing as well...also here is some good reading on clutchinghttp://www.totallyamaha.com/aaen.pdf

needle updated "82"
below15 degrees 4th clip pos
above 15 degrees 3rd clip pos
330 mj both carbs
blocked off powerjets

i never ran nothing but yamaha clutches but have info on comet set up
polaris pink spring
polaris 10A weights with 3 grams added
2 additional grams are needed if you are using the arms that came with the comet for your sled with psi pipe.

what?i said flatsides are easier because they have one throttle cable,not two like roundslides,every time you adj,idle on roundslides you are throwin em out of sync,
same setup,nothing new-peace im done!
 
Well, I'm out here testing. I took the hood off, so I could see the clutches. They arent shiftng out all the way. Belt isn't climbing in the primary, or going down th secondary.'I tried the shorter pink spring and it doesn't help. I added two more shims but that doesn't do shit either. I prefer a2 to a1. Gonna try pink spring and b2...what have I got to lose. I was also thinking of throwing in a blue primary spring and 58 gram weights for the he'll of it, if I have time...
 
what do you have in your primary for spring/weights?...dcs,i was only commenting to you about it was more than just the pull of the carbs why they went to flatslides is all.. the rest i was sharing as the premise of flatslides vs roundslides.. yikes ! dont get all offensive!! we are here to share not argue..... it's all good!!!

what are your rpm's now high? i believe you have too light of weight..the 10A polaris weights for the pipe setup shows that they weigh 58 grams..i would put the 58 gram weights to er... secondary at a-2.. see what happens...

Then i´ll terrorize you when i start playing with mine;) ramblinman please share your knowledge about the conversion to vmax clutches in the exciter knowledge 101 thread, that´s my next move:) i would also be interested in your carb setub for the -87 with flatslides and the sx porting specs:)
 
Ok, so I put the 58 gram weights, red spring, and it dropped around 500rpm to 6000rpm at wot, but I gained 15km/h! Doesn't sound as though I'm at my power rpm, so it kind of bogs, but I still have good power. I need more RPM's to reach my peak power... WTF! Ill put the blue spring in there at one point, to test, but I don't think that will help...

I forgot to switch the sec to a2, and left it at b2... Doesn't seem to have much of a difference given the type of riding we were doing.

Jetting: 330 mains with the needle clipped 2nd from bottom. Sounds good, rips good, mid range I can hear is lean.... WOT is almos dead on, I was thinking of going back to 340's but drop the needle to the max, but not until I test the needle clipped at the bottom with 330's...

Otherwise everything is great, gonna post some video as soon as I edit it.

And man do I ever wish I had my 16/33 gears :(

Try Polaris 10al weights and a the stiffer of the two comet purple springs. Should work well
 
I checked my spark plugs, and something doesn't seem right...

MAG side: PTO Side:

Could my crank seal be blown on the PTO side???
