. I can see letting people in your group know that sleds r coming ,but to let the sleds coming know that there r people in your group is utter nonsense.Ive actually had someone plow into me ,headon because his hands were in the air and not on his bars. Just so he cud tell me that there was someone behind him ,that i cud see! People where did you ever get the idea that you had to signal every snowmobiler on the trail. Is everyone braindead? I have been riding snowmobiles longer than christ, and Im tellin you that you cannot do this . It is way too dangerous! Ride smart , be carful, respect the other riders, but most of all , KEEP YOUR HANDS ON THE BARS!

Oh, you are far from being alone on this issue, There are alot of smart ,safe riders out there other than you an I.

Real simple. If I'm leading a group, and I know that there is a passing/oncoming group with a few sleds lagging behind, I will STOP or slow down at a safe point before entering a curve or a narrow trail area. When all the indicated sleds have passed, I will continue on my way. I'm not a racer, and I'm usually not in a big hurry to get anywhere, so I'd rather ensure the safety of myself, my group, and the oncoming sleds. And you're not going to tell me that every marked trail is wide enough for two sleds to safely pass, because I'll gladly take you to Walworth County, Wi and show you a bunch of trails that are no more than seven feet wide.

This post is not dumb ... if this changes one person from doing something stupid than it is worth it!

Yes, there will always be idiots, however some idiots can still be taught.

Sledding is one of those things that takes life experiences and maturity!

The point of this thread is not to change the world of sledding, there will always be accidents and idiots, it is educate. Getting the word can change the actions of a few people. A few is better than none!

You have made that point more than clear. I don't care if you idiots kill yourself, but I'd prefer if you didn't do it while snowmobiling--it gives all of us a bad name. Also, please try not to kill me, either. Thanks.
 
I tell you this...anyone that comes to the TY ride and cant respect others views and drives like and idiot or puts thierself and other riders life on the line, you can just stay home. ;)!

By educating people and telling stories of close calls or worse makes others think and that has a positive effect.

Hand signals are a must. Not only are they a curticy they are your responsibility to use for the safety of your group and the one passing you.
 
There's one thing that cracks me up about signalling how many sleds are behind you. On a crowded Saturday when 20 sleds are approaching, every 5th sled is signalling he's the last one!! Turn around once in a while!!

this post isn't going to do anything for the ignorant ones who think they're invincible/ extreme riders :D:DP Seriously now is it that hard to just admit that there is a time and place for "pushing it/ riding hard". Blind corners or hills are not the place for it... it's not worth hurting or killing someone else just to show yourself or your buddies how "GOOD" you are, i didn't reply to this to flame anyone just wanted to add my 2 cents ;)!

My cousin lives in fort erie canada and the freindship trail runs right behind his house.This trail is for people to walk/jog/bicycle on.It is not a snowmobile trail,even though everyone rides on it in the winter.The "trail marker"is accually a set of 4x4 posts they put at every intersection where the trail comes to a public road.The posts are there to try and prevent motorized vehicles from entering.
 
can someone post the signals for me? never heard of em. my 1st instinct when i see other riders siganling me is slow down and keep on my side of the trail. if i wave back it is with the throttle hand if it is safe to do so. damn i must be gettin old cause i dont remember any of this from my snowmobile course from when i was 12. :ORC

Strangely, most people use a closed fist to signal last sled in line--See "E". Would be nice if everyone was consistent at least. Also, many people hold out fingers to call out how many sleds are following them. Obviously, with mittens on this is impossible, and it is also hard to read fingers most of the time, hence the "hitchhiking thumb" thing.

Last sled in line is suppose to be a downward slash motion...although i see a lot of people tapping the top of their helmet.I dont know what the hell that means.
 
I just got back from the UP and saw this was a pretty active thread. If it doesn nothing else, at least I know who I would ride with from this site! thanks for the good comments folks!

I'll add another thing to the list,
10) If you don't pay attention to the traffic coming up behind you and wave faster sleds by.
