Worst Winter Ever

Just got back from a little burn. Went out for about an hour and 45mins and put on about 80kms. Just buzzin around....The groomers better get there asses out there because there is plenty of 5ft drifts crossing the trails that NEED to be flattened out. We got quite a bit of snow here today. It snowed all day....
 
don't you guys want to jump drifts.That is where the fun is.Running straight flat is a little boring for me.Need to get air borne on my SXR and that would be perfect.We got some huge mega drifts out here from the snow and high winds the other day..gonna bust drifts tomorrow and try not to get stuck.
 
Heck ya, love the drifts. But catchin air at 80mph in the bush with the tree's nippin your elbows........now there's some fun. ;)!
Looks like the trails we have now are it for this year. Calling for temps around and just above freezing for the next two weeks in my area.

oh ya! love the drifts, it just needs to be spread out....you can only hit them so many times before they become hard. Did another 100km today! Absolutely beautiful day. Trails were excellent and nice and fresh (groomed) for being a "yellow" status. Lots more green trails in district 9 since yesterday! Turning out to be a great winter ;)!
 
yeah I went to the River today and some of the big river bank drifts are huge.Was actually scared to attempt them with the SRX.Tried one and she was straight up on the climb for a bit and then dropped hard on top and gunned it..I feel more at ease doing it with my little 600 instead.When I wash in my younger days..that's all we ever did was climb climb and more climbing.But sleds were light in them days...lol.I never rolled one back yet..touch wood..lol
 
lol. Ya I hear that. The SRX wasnt built for hard landings. I log a lot of air time, but you need good forward momentum for smooth landings.
One thing I really like about the SRX is it's level flying. When you catch those unexpected launches at 80mph in a field, there's no surprises. She sails straight and level every time. I've yet feel out of control.....atleast while flying.
It's when your in the air and see the corner you just missed going by that makes you say...oh shyte. :o|
Some guys cant stand riding the same trails day after day, but it's good fun riding when you know every launch and every corner. It doesnt matter what other people are riding. They arent keeping up when I'm in my backyard. ;)!

To anyone riding into Shelburne from the north end along the highway. Slow down at the bend. There's a big launch that sails just slightly left, but the trail goes right, up an embankment and goes single lane between a hydro pole and a fence. I think there was even a guide wire in the mix. It's easy to ramp up the speed along there, but it's one time that the "SLOW" sign is correct. You could easily end up on the highway.
Definitely an "OH SHYTE" moment.

I don't mind riding the same trails...like you said, you know everything about the trail! As long as I get out, im happy ;)!

well I had my share of hitting drifts or small bumps at 80 mph with SRX.She flies up but again lands nicely..kinda a neat feeling..did a huge driveway jump the other day along the Hwy,actually it was a build up of dirt to connect from a Farmers drive across the ditch to Hwy.Now hit that at good speed..SRX was nicely airborne for a while but landed very well and didn't even slow me down..lol
 
They do seem to be pretty well balanced in the air. I keep getting more nervy everytime I ride it. Literal ditch banging makes me nervous. I caught a culvert on a mach Z years ago. Just about cleaned my knee caps off. lol

Just drove home through a decent snow storm from Tobermory to Owen Sound. Jobs done, screw the invoice till Monday. I'm goin sleddin. :sled1:
 
So I noticed this feeling of apprehension when I'm pushing the limits at night in the tight bush and just figured it was due to being away from sledding for so long. I recently helped my buddy restore a 98 xlt special that has never had so much as a carb cleaned since 1999. Badly abused but 110% reliable and the thing has always been on rails.
Nice to have him back on the trail because he's rode with me since the early days and rides like a carbon copy of me. So there it was...full on balls out bush bangin. After a few close calls and some blown corners, he says....this sucks with no banks to guide you.
Thats it. No banks, no trail sight. Your looking for snowmobile tracks for clues as to where the trail turns. Years ago we always had good banks that picked up your headlight.
I know there's trail markers on tree's and the bigger signs that give direction, but anyone thats an aggressive rider knows that the signs are useless. If your looking in the tree's for clues or waiting to be able to make out a sign, your going to either die, or have to slow down.
Soooo, I guess we simply have to slow down without those banks to guide us.
Now I see why folks are pissed. Bring on some damn snow.
 
I guess that is why there are speed limits in the trails.lol
Lakes are the best place to pin it. Less blind corners.
I have had too many near misses on the trails this year.
At least there is no shortage of snow this year.
 
Well we (my son & I) got our old sled out and got out ride two weekends now. By far not the best since temps always climbed above freezing. the Snow was frozen crusty wet snow without powder or fresh stuff. Another time in a light rain on 3-4 inches of fresh heavy snow. Then on breaking up old crusty snow and melting ice on the trails. 150km on this weekend ok for us but. Most places just barely covering the dirt or stones etc. Some area wear limited trails mostly stones/gravel bed exposed or hitting rocks through the thin coating. Field trails were the best but barely enough and it was +5C that last day of riding. The weather is weird still. Cold freezing nights to freeze up what there is but it warms up when its riding time.

We're hoping for one more weekend with a big dump of snow Tues/Wed if it shows but the weather with warmer temperatures at the time and them say rain/snow mix up to 20cm does not instill confidence. We trailered and also rode northboard but it was all the same more or less with the trails just barely covered enough with heavy old packed wet snow.

Which make me wonder if these sleds or any have thermostats for water cooling regulation. Way does Yamaha put the cooler on the underside of the running board and one at the front of the tunnel rather than back where the snow get flug onto? The othe sled a Do Formula has the cooler rails on the underside of the tunnel getting more snow action and stud won't damage it up there.
 
Yep, daytime riding is poor lately with the days being warm. Night riding isnt to bad as the snow tightens up.
On a brighter note, I see the temps getting cold again starting Friday. ;)!

Didnt get out last night, but the guys say the trails are the best they've been this year.

Well I just got back from riding District 9 and a bit of District 8. Went to Markdale, Collingwood, Durham, Mount Forest and everywhere in between. Did 500 clicks. During the day, snow was slow but at night, they tightened up and found my self doing 70 - 80 mpg in some trails. Frightening. Groomers need to do some more work as we where breaking alot of 6 inch deep trails. Smelt belt quite a few times pushing the heavy wet stuff. All in all, not bad but definately the best I have seen.

Wow thats quite the ride. That route/area at least has gas stations. Unlike a lot out in Districk 3 and north. Many posted fuel stops on the maps don't exist so you have to be careful. I am sure the machine works harder in this heavy snow that came down and you likely got it where you rode as well. I am off tonight to Belleville area and see if the trails are open and good enough this weekend. Tuesday is the start of another meltdown so this is it for me. Either way at little run or a bigger one but nothing like what you do.
Your butt must be sore!!! LOL
 
Going back up tomorrow until Wednesday. Another 400 more. Got some electrical crap to go thru first as Cylinder #1 does not fire correctly, especially at WOT.
 
Well we're done for the season. Afte over 300km this weekend (a weekend best for us) from Corbyville trail head to just south of Bancroft (St OLA Rd) on E106 we go back down to a local eatery "Daves Roadhouse" in Bloomfield for some great Wings (really hot, burnt going both ways!!!).

Will start planning some repairs and maintenance not done for some time for the next year. I started a thread in the non power valve sectioin however. Knowone has offered any input or suggestions on tackling the desired area's. Oh well such is life on the forum. Good luck sledding for those still plugging away.

My son and I always concider it a good season and/or day when we arrive back without incident. No breakdowns or incidents and injuries and do repairs for the next year that appear needed. We clink the end of the ride with a couple of beers outside over the sleds, well done and we're satisfied at what we got.
 
man winter is not done here yet..had 4 inches last night and another 6 maybe today.It is coming down hard now..wow Christmas all over again..lovin it.It sure looks purdy now..gonna have to get the 600 out and enjoy this stuff rest of the week... ;)! :sled1: :sled1: :sled1: :sled1:
