New Belt??

now I just measured a new 8DN-17641-01 at 1134 mm outside circumference.
And just measured an old belt 8DN-17641-00 at 1130 mm outside circumference.
Seems the difference is about a 4 mm difference or so...almost 3/16".So there is a difference.I now believe Yamaha should of made the friggin c to c on the 4 strokes the same as the 2 strokes. What were they thinking here?? You would think it would of been easy to get the same c to c when building a new sled..like get real here..but now they decide to make the belts longer and not caring about all the older sleds and the belts they use..you would think the Engineers maybe would of had that figure in their Brains since they have been usuing that c to c for many years..why would you change such a number..
Never fails to surprise us.. seems like I don't have an issue using the new Belt, but for those who do..write Yamaha and complain (LOL)..seriously your gonna have to get your clutch's aligned properly. The Belt will work and if yours squeals then you are gonna have to bring the motor in some.... :o| .But in reality if the new Belts are longer, you should never be getting a squeal from it,if it was shorter..then you would.
This is something you would expect from Cat or Doo...

AFEW THINGS. FIRST THE '' YAMAHA GETTING OUT OF SNOWMOBILING COMMENT ''. LMFAO. GEE THAT WHY THEY JUST HOOKED UP WITH CAT ? YOUR CLUELESS. GUYS THE 00 BELT WAS THE TWO STROKE BELT. YAMAHA LONG DONE WITH THOSE , LIKE ABOVE, 01 BELT SPEC,S TO CURRENT 4 STROKES. IN HENCE MONSTERS MEASUREMENTS. NOW, I CAN,t BELIEVE THERE IS NOT 00 BELTS STILL OUT THERE. CALL AROUND. 3:16(yammie tony)

why didn't they just keep the clutch c to c the same on every sled and don't even get involved with changing belt specs..seems a little stupid on their part don't you think 3:16...goofy thinking here.

There are serious engineer flaws with my 2000 SRX, but only when you service them do you notice. They drive great but for an example, to check the chain case oil level, is definitely an engineer's brain fart. :o| :o| :o|

they should of made a gauge (electronic) to show chain case oil level or if it drains by accident that a warning light will come on like in the oil reservoir .

NExT TIME YOUR AT A YAMAHA PRE SPRING DEALER SHOW, ASK THE REP WHY YOU CAN,T GET A BELT FOR YOUR SRX ANYMORE !!!!! LMFAO. I KNOW WHAT HE IS GONNA TELL YA. ONE OF TWO ANSWERS '' WHATS A SRX '' OR '' BUY A 4 STROKE ''. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Tony..Yamaha made their money off us old farts..now they have to work on selling all this tech stuff to the new comers, younger crowd..and boy are they ever raising the bar with the prices..guess they think everyone is rich coming up the ladder...

I agree, Brain fart on the air screw adjustments as well!could be a lot worse though.... green and on fire lol

I think most of the issues with the 8DN series of belts are due to issues with suppliers. Yamaha has worked to correct this issue, but there are likely still a number of "poor" 8DN-01 belts out there. As anybody familiar with manufacturing knows, things change over time. Some intentional and some not, some for the better and some not. A belt manufacturer would not know there is a problem until enough users of the product provide feedback to Yamaha. Yamaha engineers spec and approve the belts, but these other companies make them along with a much larger number of other belts across other industries. If I recall correctly there was a supplier change or at least a merger that resulted in a different plant making the 8DN belts.

btw: How would you QC and test belts. I can't imagine any way to simulate all that goes on with a belt in a typical high powered sled. Anybody actually work in this field?

I know that belt mfgs make a wide range of belts for many industries, but I believe that the OEM belts have to be made at certain dimensions that the aftermarket can't duplicate. For example, if Gates makes a belt for Yamaha to put their name on it, and that belt calls for such and such angle ad whatever OC using this compound that's the only belt that can have that. Gate's own belt sold for the same application has to be something else. Different angle, or have a different circumference or compound or whatever.

I don't know what to use now. I have an 89L on my machine now, and one spare. When they are shotsky, I guess 8DN, or aftermarket it is.....

I am going to try the Ultimax XS 805 next season. It is a little softer and supposed to be well built,as these belts are used in racing. It will grab better with less slipping..so you would have to take some weight out of the clutch.
I am now running 53 grams total with 8DN-20's and today being colder am still over reving to 8600.I see some marks toward the top of the sheaves, darker then the rest..so that is telling me the belt is slipping some.I seem to start hitting past 100 and then she drops on me instead of picking up..

whatever the difference is between the two, all i did was change a belt. my center to center has always been spot on, offset per spec, even set the new belt to the secondary.

what i experienced was a severe loss of performance, high shift rpms, what i call "wingy" rpms, along with some seriously noticable clutch temp increases. belt was washed and scuffed prior to install and i consider well broken in over a 20 mile period with varying throttle, never wfo. running heel clicker clutching and you know how those should grab a belt.

i, for one, will be trying different aftermarkets to hopefully find a suitable replacement.

if anyone is interested, i have a new in the bag -01 along with a barely used under 40 miles -01 up for grabs.

Exactly my issue!
A real pain in the a$$ once you've dialed the clutching in for a specific kind of belt. :o|

what an interesting observation..wow..maybe that is why I am not reach top end speeds like I did in the past..my clutches are cool after wot pulls only, belt warm.I really want to try a softer compound belt for sure next season to see if things change.I don't think I should still be over reving with 8dn-20's with 4.5 inner and 5 outer..but still am today 8600-8650..I am sure my belt is slipping some on top of primary ..thanks Yamaha for screwing with our SRX performances with the wrong belts..thats not right..
