"The Summer Project Contest " 440X

I started a thread in the TY Builds but i guess i will enter and post here ...........fisrt off i started this project last fall but been going good on it now for a little over 2 months .............sled is a mix and match custom build vintage drag sled ...........with the years of 76-79

OK so here is the scoop sled started out as a 79 SRX i picked up last fall tunnel came off a 76 exciter 440 the hood is the one that came with the sled and was a complete mess but it is coming together nicely so what we are going for here is a 77 SRX 440 X Sno-Pro ..clone. while i would love to some day add a reall 77 to my line-up this one will have to do for now the only big thing i am hung up on it the motor .........and i have 3 choices to look at i can by a motor that i know of from a well know motor builder for a very good price ...........send a top end out and have it done or (which i am leaning towards) building the motor myself .......so here is what we got so far

the rails after about 3 hrs of welding and grinding the whole skid was rattle canned black so after a good blasting and filling all the extra holes that where put in the rails and then sanding and polishing everything i must have at least 20hrs in the skid

removing original tunnel from the bulkhead

makeing the extra support brace for the radiator which i later scrapped as i got a little far ahead of myself and will have to redo it due to the hood .....take note on the front beam of the bulkhead and the typical bow whick i made a jig a long time ago to straighten these as you can see

must always over bend and once you release it will be straight this one came out almost perfect just the pto side is off about a 1/16 of a inch from the main frame to the spindle tube

then it was time to start on the hood i am building this sled off of nothing but pictures i have collected over the years and using reference points from the sled and decals .........so we cut the hood down and had to rework the PTO side of the hood to clear the clutch guard this was a long proccess but the bet thing is the hood looks factory on the inside

then it was time to add the "eggs" to the hood for the spark plug and cap clearance .......i made a mold out of a piece of 2'' wood dowel i shaped

for now this is as far as i can go with the hood until i get the chassis back together which should be this week as the bulkhead should be back from powder coating ........then i can check all my clearances and finish the body work on the hood ......which a ton of it had to be ground out due to all the spiders in the original gel coat i have over a quart of resin on it now..so for now i am just working on the tunnel and belly pan making them nice and shiney

looking to upgrade my rx-1its an 03 i am now in love with snowmobiling but i want mor power...any ideas/.

03 rx1 your say ......well been a few years since i set one up but the last one got the full treatment ......exhaust full intake kit i made up and the slp cv springs to work with the intake and of course jetting .......then there was the most important part a set of heavy hitters custome tuned clutch kit that i did ..........but just good clutching is more than enough as i do not think the exhaust did a damn thing and was a waist of money but he wanted the sound .............

...........as far as picks i have them but need to load them up i will see if i have time tomorrow to get then posted just been too busy in the shop for anytime for myself .........hoping to paint this weekend

ok finally the hood is ready for paint ........i may paint it tonight but need to set up the shop first for painting ...........once the hood is painted i will have over 100 hrs into pain stakingly rebuilding and cloning this hood into a 77 sno-pro hood from nothing but pictures and talk ing with a few people
