Hey guys I think I finally got enough courage to change the track myself. I read the procedure in the tech section, is there any tips or tricks to make it easier or anything I need to be looking for while I have the skid off? Thanks for any advice!
 
Make sure to check out those plates that the very front bolts go through. I had two srx's that the holes were enlongated. If yours are not still round, I hate to say it is not an easy repair. I actually made new stainless plates for mine.

You will have to get way up inside the tunnel once everything is out an have a look.
 
Start soaking that speedo bearing with a good penetrating oil. If the tracks never been changed or that bearing off it can be tough to get off. Spray the set screws also. I started hitting it once a day a couple days before i started and they all came off pretty easy. Lots of pictures and keep track the order and place everything came apart in chain case. If youve never had it apart yet it can be overwhelming.
 
its really not that hard, it gets hyped u way to much. i just did mine on me sxr. do all the bearings in the chain case, at least the lower seal on the chain case, and the pto drive bearing. well your in there you might as well do them, its not that much extra work. the chain case has to come out(for me it did) to slip the drive axle out. make sure you put the track on in the right direction, look for cracks in the w arm, might as well re enforce it, do the w arm bushings and if your up for it tap grease fittings in the lower w arm mount and look to make sure the rib on the inside of the rail that the center shock mount rides on isnt sheared off. look at bethevipers skid rebuild. that what i did. you dont have to do all this, but when i was in there i went balls to the walls and did it. good luck. btw an impact driver can help get those set screws out.

Several guys have posted about using "magic carpets" for sliding skid in/out. This is the el cheapo snow sled (gravity powered/down hill) that rolls back up as soon as you get off from it. I have never tried it myself. I used 3 short pieces of PVC pipe(stuck in side ways). Anything you can stick between the skid and track so rails don't hang up on the drive cogs on the track.
 
Oh the good old crazy carpets, I miss those. I haven't been on one in years. Sure I'll get on one this year with the 2yr old. They are pretty fun especially all liquored up!
 
Hang the track by a bar for a few days to let any wrinkles stretch out ( if the track was wrapped up ) and I would bet that the W arm bushings and collars are beat.The two L shaped brackets that bolt to the rails need to be drilled and tapped for a grease zerk so the next set of bushing will last.Check the W arm over closely for cracks but even if it isn't reinforce it before you put it back in.

Bearings you'll be needing,more than likely,are :
1. drive shaft pto side UB205
2. chaincase 6205 x 2 (upper and lower)

Check the bearings in all your idler wheels in the skid too,6205 (idlers) and 6004 (rear axle) fit them.

Use blue loctite on fasteners to keep em from backing off too.
 
I'm guessing those are the part numbers for the bearings? Will they come greased or will I have to pack em full of grease?
 
Pay attention to how the ones in the chaincase are installed. Also, pickup new seals for the chaincase upper and lower.
The seal of one side of the chaincase bearings will be removed so that the chaincase oil can get into the bearing.
Service manual shows all of this.
 
Ok great, thanks guys! Probly going to dig into this soon...after the baby is born which I'm hoping will be this weekend. Just trying to get a list of things I'll need and how to do this properly for now.
 
Those numbers are what you will need when you go to a place that sells bearings,they are stamped on the grease seal or on the bearing race.They come packed with grease so all you do is snap em in and go.

Royal Distributing has bulk packs of bearings plus all the drive line bearings you'll need if you don't have a place near you that can get them for you.The drive axle bearing number from them is ***205NR and is an NTN bearing.It comes with a cir clip for some reason just toss it and your good to go.
 
Well I've started on the track removal, I've loosened the 17 & 19mm nuts at the back of the skid, then it says to loosen the 14mm track tension nuts... But I can't get a socket in through the track window too well. Do I really need to loosen the track tension, or can I just carry on with dropping the skid to the floor? Thanks guys!
 
you get a utility knife and cut a little away on the windows so you can get a socket in there..you will have to loosen the track tension to get skid apart from the track...
