2000 sxr clutching, and gearing

Haven't been on much lately. I thought you did mr vipers setting a few weeks ago, or no? I swear you did right after that diagram was posted showing what circuit of carb is being used for different throttle positions. I logged on and saw your post turned into 6 pages and I thought something else happened. Hey, at least you have snow. I washed my sled wearing a t-shirt Friday. It was 63F. Today it was cold, 56F, lol
 
soo, the sled is spot on.no bog or burble what so ever.i have different clutching and gearing parts that im gonna try to get max performance out of my sxr.one setup for the stock pipe, and one for the pipes.rode 250 miles this weekend, and had a blast with my buddies.they think im crazy, cause there sleds dont handle as well as mine.it doesnt take long to leave them in the dust.ill have half a cigarette smoked before they even pull up to the intersection.sled is handling mint!!!duall 8 inch woodys slim jims do the trick.the sled is balanced soo well, i can rip around a corner, and hardly even have to move my body.everyone that tries it, doesnt want to get back on there sleds after.now i need to gear and clutch to get all i can out of it on the pond,and im gonna leave it alone after that.i love the sxr sleds,im my opinion, theres nothing better on the trails as far as handling goes.
 
How much snow do you still have? I am done dialing mine in for the season unless we get a fluke blizzard, which has been known to happen, I didn't even get to test my skid swap for transfer and handling.
 
still plenty of snow up here, especially in the higher terrain.still crossing my fingers for a good spring snowstorm, and hoping it doesnt rain.warm days settles the snow, and cold night sets it up hard enough to go anywhere you want out through the woods.its gotta be 4 feet deep in the woods.the lakes and ponds have about 2 feet of ice, so ill be tuning on the pond for a little while longer.doing my snow dance!!!
 
WOW, 4 feet? I don't think I ever even saw 4' of snow unless it was from a plow. I'll ship my sled to you so you can test it.lol
Sounds like you got a good month left of riding. The biggest snowstorm I can remember was the ground hog day blizzard. I think it was 5 years ago maybe. Just under 18" of snow over night. I stayed up all night watching it. 70mph winds, it was great and the weather radio kept going off at around 3am with a warning that I never heard of before, a civil danger emergency or something like that. I guess it meant if you call 911, don't expect any help. I have to say it was the best storm I ever saw winter or summer.

just curious about how many members have tried the bender pipes on there sx sleds, and liked them?25 hp is a huge gain for any sled.my buddy wants me to try nitros,lol. im not going down that road!!!he had an old srx 440 with nitrous that would spank everyone, including thundercats.aaen built the engine for him.he shaved all the lugs off the track, and put over 200 1 inch studs in it.the thing was hard to hold on to.he told me a story about how his friend with a v-max 4 had one of 11 clutch kits from yamaha, and would win at every race, even beating tim bender!!!the v-max 4 had an extra skeleton to keep the sled straight down the drag strip.these guys still ride, are done racing ,but still have a bunch of parts i can try on my sled. guess i better get busy testing and tuning!!!when i get it dialed in, ill let you guys know what im running for a setup.
 
so in reading aaens clutch tuning handbook for the tenth time,i have decided to try to get a straight shift out of my primary clutch, or as close to it as i can.right now, im pulling 8100 rpm out of the hole, and 8250 on top. 51-43 helix,stock springs, 89l weights with a 2.6 rivet.gonna try a spring with the same engagement, and two steps higher finish.sled runs awesome thanks to mr viper for the jetting and needle setting that he gave me!!!sled runs exellent in the lower elevations, but has a slight burble when going up to 3,400 ft.lots of mountains where i ride, so elevation is always different.sled probably wouldnt like going to the top of mt.washington, 6,288 ft.also ordered a max performance 52-40 helix to try.still running stock pipe bored out.gonna try that, and ill post the results for anyone who is interested in trying these combinations.once its dialed in for the stock pipe, im putting the bender pipes on, and gonna dial them in!!!i gotta say that when i first started tuning i was kinda lost on what to try first, and what came next.now i know that it all starts with the primary weights and springs, and secondary helix.fine tuning comes after that.the more i work on the sled the better i understand what works!!!clutch efficiency is the main goal for better overall performance, and im going for the best possible setup i can get.
 
warm weather moving in today, and tomorrow rain,hoping it doesnt wash too much snow away.there are still a few places i know i can go to ride, and test my sled, but it is gonna go fast after a few days of warmer weather.cold temps at night will help to set the trails back up again, guess im gonna have to hit the trails early in the morning if i wanna get any traction.gonna work on the sled while its raining,and make a few changes.probably wont do any testing until this weekend.there is a radar run this weekend,and im probably gonna go if its cold enough, and the track is o.k.i will post the results if i do!!!
 
didnt make it to the radar runs, had my grandson this weekend.i did however take him and the sled out on the pond, and made a few passes.a little ride on the trails too.i followed benders recomendation for the pipes,55 pilots, and 150 mains.it seems like it has more in it than its doing right now. could it be the pilots they told me to use?i looked at the tuning page and turks recomendations for the pipes dont say anything about changing the pilots.wondering if i should go back to the stock pilots, or will it burn down my engine?89l weights ,2.6 rivet, stock springs,51/43 helix,22-40 gearing, bender pipes.i hit 8500 rpm, and the sled pulled hard, but it seemed like it could pull harder with 200 more rpm.anyone have any input on this?should i put the stock pilots back in?
 
also, i set the washers on the needles at # 3, #4, #3 position,with a washer on top, and bottom,would i be better off to try to move the washer to the top of the needle instead of changing the pilots?i am looking for some good advice, dont want to burn it down!!!thanks in advance. brian
 
so, i looked up the spec for the pipes in the engine section, and it says 52.5 pilots for 0-3500 ft.i called bender, and they told me that they recomended the 55 pilots because they set everything up for 20 degrees . they said they use the average temperature for the whole united states, which is 20 degrees, and that is a starting point, fine tuning can be done afterwards.they suggested going to the 52.5 pilots for warmer temps, and told me to leave the washers on the needles in the stock positions.one on top, and one on bottom.i guess i dont understand why i couldnt move the washers as mr viper told me to do to clear up the midrange burble that i had before, and lean it out that way?bender first told me when i ordered the mains, and pilots that this would be for 7-25 degrees.now the temps are warmer,20-40 degrees, spring riding conditions.im gonna change the pilots to 52.5 and try it unless mr viper, or another member has a better solution for me to try.im also going to order a new primary spring.in the engine section it calls for 42-4400 rpm engagement with the pipes.anyone know what spring would work to get this engagement with the 89l weights with a 2.6 rivet ?im just asking for advice so that i dont chase my tail, and spend $ that i shouldnt have to.if anyone would like to make a suggestion i would appreciate it. thanks brian
 
You probably will need to move the needle....probably. The best advice that I have recieved is make only one adjustment at a time. You need to document it, and then test it. Plug test yes, piston wash better. Then see where you need to go with the next adjustment. Do full throttle, and half throttle plug tests. See how the sled winds up and rolls down. Post pictures of the plugs. plug reading comes woth time, and pictures really never do it justice. Posting them and asking what to look for will guide you towards better observation skills. Know what you are trying to correct/achieve before doing anything. The worst thing to do is make a bunch of changes and loose sight of any baseline.
 
I have a 700 Mtn Max with Bender Pipes, it rips. The pipes are probably the quietest pipes I've run. I had a set of Simons/Hauck pipes on my 700sx, they also really ripped but were very load compared to the Bender pipes even though they both have similar looking stingers and the Simons stingers were recently repacked. I don't know what your DNR guys are like out there, but I've never been bothered by the DNR here.

just got home from riding,one of my buddies is in the snowmobile club, and went groomng today, so we rode the trails he groomed earlier.its 15 degrees, and the sled was ripping up the trails.went to pond of safety, and it was flat as a super highway, made about 15 passes and the only sled that would beat me was a zr 900. he had a little more on the top end than me.i changed the belt to a carlile ultimax from the parts sled, and it doesnt slip at all.it brought my rpm down to 8000.i should be at 8700 for the pipes.im sure if i put the stock weights back in with the 4.5 rivet in the first hole,and 3.4 in the tip.i will be at 8700.gonna try it, and ill post the results after.
 
i also like to make one change at a time, it gives me a better understanding of what works and what doesnt.this is the first year that i have tried soo many different weights, and helix combinations.not soo much on the gearing, went from 23-40 to 22-40.the carb settings are something that is new to me, i didnt even know about the needles being soo important.im still learning, but have a good understanding of how a small change can make a huge difference in performance.i have spent probably thousands of hours reading on this site.mostly about clutching, and gearing.lately ive been reading about jetting, and needles, and now i can understand how important it is to get the perfect mixture.huge gains in performance compared to stock.i am going to start reading my plugs from now on, and make adjustments from there.but first, i want to get the right rpm for the pipes, and then dial it in from there.last night my buddy rode with us, he has a vector. we were both even in a drag race. he said he was seeing 105 on his speedo.the sled runs awesome with the pipes, better on a cold night like last night.im still at 8000 rpm, cant wait to get the rpms at 8700 and try that.i dont think much will come close to my sled after that,she is a beast!!!
 
love the pipes also,bender says they are only 6 decibles louder than a stock can.im gonna re pack them when the season is done. i think boring the can is just as loud as the pipes, or louder.the extra power is awesome. im gonna run them until i get a ticket, and then ill change it back to stock, and put the pipes on for radar runs only.probably gonna go back to 23-40 gearing when i get the rpm right, and try that.
 
so, we got about 4 inches of new snow last night on top of allready mint trails at jericho park.i changed the weights back to stock with a 4.5 in the first hole, and 3.4 in the tip, and im going out tonight to try them.the season is coming to an end soon, so not much more time for testing.hoping my parts come in before the weekend, so i can try a few different things.thinking about dropping the needles to a 2.5, 3.5,2.5 setting for the weekend, its gonna be about 50 degrees.here is a pic of my back yard last night.lolsnowman.jpg

went out last night, and the trails were perfect in the park, and good to marginal in other spots.sled was running good, but would not rev over 8500 rpm in the begining.after that it would only rev about 8200.i think the thing is running too rich.the colder it got, the better it ran.i think the 55 pilots are too big, or the needles should be dropped a half setting.didnt really like the stock weights back in the sled, the 89l weights have much more pull than the stock weights.just curious if anyone else has dropped the needles to a 2.5/3.5/2.5 setting with the bender pipes?and did it make it run better in warmer temps?or should i change the pilots to 52.5?any help would be much appreciated.im riding tomorrow night,and the low temp will be 30 degrees, also riding this weekend on sunday, and its gonna be about 50 degrees.after that, its gonna be in the 60s all week, and my season will be over.will i be safe to drop the needles or should i wait for the pilots?i dont want to burn it down. thanks brian
 
well, i figured out my rpm problem,the bearing on the speedo side is wiped out!!!i did feel a little vibration on the way home on the last ride.hoping i can get some new bearings today, and put it back together tonight.i guess ill be riding the wifes sled tonight if i cant.
 
took the wifes venom out last night,the trails were perfect.tried my secondary on her sled with the 51/43 helix,and the sled had a hard time pulling up to rpm.it seems to be running too rich as my sled did.gonna have to make some changes on hers next season too.anyone have a good idea on what jets, and needle settings that her sled needs to run better?its loading up big time!!!gonna change the bottom bearings in my sxr tonight.i put the 89l weights back in with no rivets.gonna take it out one last time this weekend, and probably gonna put them away after.its gonna be 60 all next week, and im pretty sure its gonna be over after that.heres a pic of our ride last night.ride.jpg
