The can will get you the sound, but the pipes will get you the monster that is hiding inside that lil' ol Vipe!

I'm right between York and Gettysburg. Specifically where NO snow seems to accumulate! Wish we were closer, I could let you hear/ride my Viper which is thoroughly "Benderized". It would probably help you decide if you want to pipe or not. It's worth it IMO, and the sound is sweet music. There's nothing like the muscular sound of a Yammy tripple in a sea of buzzing twins! A younger guy I know who just started riding (rides a Pro X 440 fan) heard my Viper for the first time recently and asked me if it was a 4 stroke! I laughed, because he just didn't understand why my sled sounded so different than his. I popped the hood and watched his eyes get real big when he saw 3 in a row and that tangled mess of pipes under there! If it would have been a VMax 4 with quads he probably would have wet his pants!

acnas: Each actual sled is different and clutching needs to be performed according to testing on that particular sled. There are so many variables such as, engine state of tune, condition of both clutches, alignment, belt condition, typical riding conditions, etc. that it is hard to say that fully loading the stock weights works on all stock vipers.
I would change the tip to 4.5 only if you are overreving on top-end before full shift-out. The .9 gram increase will likely bring RPMs down 100 - 200.

The implication was that it is overreving, because honestly i haven't seen a stock one yet that wasn't over revving a little, but hey its always possible.

hey rider who do you deal with down that way??? I buy all my stuff of F&S in spring grove. I had a set of triple pipes on hold last fall but jsut couldnt round up the cash then. I was on benders site looking at diff options and how would this sound? bender single pipe, bender can, vforce reeds. i could do all that for the price of a new set of triples without labor and the gasket and other mods needed. i do already have it clutched and the rear heat xchanger. but those 3 pipes do look so sweet and id kill for the power my srx had before i got the viper.

Wow, you got me. My sled came from F&S. If you know any of them down there, I ended up getting one of Andy's personal sleds. If my sled is any indication of their work, these guys know their stuff. Close to 3900 miles with the tripples and no problems. He claimed they have done 25+ Vipers with the tripples and only lost 1. Bad Canada gas since a stocker and a mod burned down at the same time. I can't verify this 100%, but they seem to be pretty honest guys.
Can't believe you travel that far to deal with them! No decent Yammy dealers in your area?

did you notice a big difference with the bender can and pipe?TimeBomb said:i agree, i love my viper. every time i ride it i love it, it is not the fastest out there but it keeps me around the middle of the pack. i'm gonna hate the day i get rid of it but i gotta pay for the apex gt somehow. all i did to mine was bender can, bender single pipe, heel clicker clutch kit and studs for performance anyway. lots of other accessories

You lucky dog rider!! I know all those guys real well i take my sled there every year(well didnt last year) they do all my service and i got my viper there too. Bob,Andy,Terry and all the guys in the back are great.I wouldnt trust my yami with anyone else. Lat weekend i was up in buffalo at the wsa snowcross and ran into andy's old racing buddy...brett bender. Brett myself and my wife were in the buffalo news talking about the event when we mentioned andys name it was like old home week up there.
I'am with you guys, I love my 03 viper. It's a great all around fun sled.
Plus, great gas miliage and looks and runs real smooth. I ran with a 03 doo(legend 600), 03 polaris 700 classic and a 02 cat zr 600 that caught on FIRE after loosing the pipe bolts in the newberry area. I had the best gas milage average 14.5 miles per gal., low oil useage, and NO problems at all. I put on 900 miles, which is low for me. I bought the sled from the TY classifieds. Mr Sled does a GREAT job with the web page.
I added c&a pros, 2" bar riser, RT nuts, and shaper bars to the sled. The only thing I would like to add is a new windshield: med chrome or chrome blue from Cobra. The stock 03 windshield is ok, but the cobra has better protection.
My 03 was set up by Rock Thumbs in WI, he the Yamaha guru of sleds, very knowledgeable guy.
The new sled are cool, thats for sure, but I wanted the last best yamaha 2 stroke made= Viper.

If you go with the pipe/can/reeds combo your sled will be lighter and maybe 6 horsepower stronger and with better throttle response, but I dont think it is worth it compared to the power increase of tripple pipes (over 20% increase with minimal sacrifice in reliability). My brother has that exact bender pipe and can combo with V-Force reeds and he cant stand to ride my sled becuase for the same money he could have 800cc power. And really there is not too much more labor (full day compared to couple hours) involved in installing tripple pipes compared to reeds/pipe/can. And if you go with SLP tripple pipes you dont have to mod the head and SLP's are quieter then the bender tripple piped vipers I have ridden with. Yes you will have to rejet and reclutch, but you would probably want to do that after installing a pipe/can/reeds anyhow.
Do you ride with any trip piped vipers? I was not impressed at all with the power of my viper (my powder special 700 had more power and pol 600's seemed just as strong) and putting on tripple pipes seemed like I had a whole new sled for $700.

I think the Kit from Hauk with pipes, jets, reeds, clutch parts, torque limiter is about $1300. Oh and the head mod was $100. ak ryda Your right, it is a brand new sled, amazingly fast. Negatives: the power valves are harder to clean because you have to remove the pipes, you loose gas mileage/range, and you also have to worry about state laws for pipes, but I have not had a problem yet in 4 years. I have almost 8000 miles on mine. Only problems, broken motor mount, blown rear shock, water pump seal, and the updates (which I never had problems with). All under warranty. My temp light came on once before I put the rear exchanger on and only one other time in 8000 miles. I think I am starting to loose power now. I have a consistent 85 pounds in each cylinder on a compresion test from last night, I think I may need new rings possibly NiSil cylinders. That is my experience with pipes, I gotta admit the throttle just makes you grin. Oh and the best thing you can ever do for a viper besides pipes is put a 2" riser block on it.

if you go to the other site and search under kirkswim there is a pretty good stock viper clutch setup. pulls good throughout the rpm range and will totally change the way your sled performs. i have ridden this sled before and after the clutches where tuned. with that setup it acted like a whole new sled. almost made me wish i had bought a viper/tripple instead of the sxr500 i did buy last season.

They just want to sell what they have on the floor - save your money and pipe the viper!!
I had a guy tell me I would like an 02 Viper left over (2 years old) better than a new Viper S - I think he was WRONG!! He was just trying to get rid of his old sled!!

That's kinda funny, my buddy was down there Friday and they were trying to sell him on a Vector too! He was kinda interested in what the Nytro had to offer since he's a stand up bump junky. Course, dude's still running a Phazer so anything will be a big time upgrade. Did stand up bump riding even exist when Phazers were in their prime?! I gotta give him credit, he tosses that ol' Phazer around hard, and it just goes and goes. They really were great sleds and it is amazing how many of them you still see on the trails. So light and agile and still fun to pop around on. Not 150 horse tripple fun, but fun in their own way.
It's a tough call I guess. I want to try out a 4 stroke as well, because I am quite familiar with a 4 strokes abilities. I've had tons of fun on 600 class sportbikes and my current 450R quad is a blast as well. I couldn't swallow the pain of a $9000 plus sled so used had to due for now. I'd order an RTX tommorrow if money was no object, but sadly the wife, child, future home and other hobbies have to be balanced out! I'm like you though, I wanted to have the last great Yammy 2 stroke and I intend to keep it even when I upgrade. The wife doesn't know she's getting a Viper yet!
I'm sure you will figure out what is best route for you. Obviously the new stuff is awesome but the Viper is still a great sled. Heck, counting mine I saw at least 5 or 6 of em' today at the local romp! We pulled in and it was like a snake feeding frenzy. I didn't hear any that sounded quite like mine, but then again a tripple pipe Vipe is major overkill for where we scoot around. It's still fun to get the stares when you fire it up!

I think I would agree with this statement after today. My Rox 2" billet risers came Friday just in time to try out today. Good God it was like a whole different sled as far as the ergonomics. No more trashing my knees and I can finally stand up without feeling like a pretzel! Arms were WAY less tired at the end of the day and I just felt like I had a lot more control and room for movement. Excellent mod, gotta thank those who recommended it. Makes me wonder how that Excell seat riser would work, but I have a big problem with a $200 piece of plastic for under my seat. I'm just up and down so much when I ride that a shorter sit/stand transision would be nice. Anyone have one of these or sat on a Viper with one? Is it worth the price of admission?

Completely ergonomically different with a 2" riser. The fatigue and sore back are gone. I could use something a little stiffer in my seat material, I think it is just getting worn out.
I would go with a set of SLP pipes .Get a hold of MAXX.PERFORANCE they will treat you rigt and have a good clutch set up to go with the power of the pipes.SLP pipes are quieter than DYNO PORT can.

I definitly recomend getting the 2" bar risers i have had my viper for a season and a half and saw a great diffrence in the quality of the ride. I am 6 2" so when i used to stand up i would be bent pretty far and this really helps. But I'm still pretty hunched so i'm thinkig about the 8" inch ajustable ones. If you are thinking about the seat riser you might want to think another inch on the handle bars also.
