I Love My Viper !!!

Stupid as i was, the only time i checked the plugs was when the sled has idled for a while. And that time the color of the plugs looked good. It would probably have looked different if i checked them after a lake race.

Did i forgot to add something to the sled when i had the pipes? Or did i just have an extremely bad luck?

I can´t tell you how much it sucks not to be able to ride. We will only have snow for a couple of more weeks, so this is not how i wanted to end my season. Have only ride it for less than 450 miles.

you have pipes on the sled?? that seems to be trouble on the vipers, either horrendous mileage or burn-down. not ALL the time, but more often than not from what I gather.

how you like the ripsaw? do that and the m10 at the smae time? wanting to doa simmons/ripsaw upgrade over the summer. think it should transform it to an even better trail tamer :)

Love the ripsaw.. Did that before last year and the M10 before this year.. Both together makes it tough to get rid of the viper... But I need something with less miles...

what do you have for miles? was the effect of the ripsaw one that changes how the whole sled felt? seems like there is a tremendous amount of trackspin at any speed on the trail :( ought to be a bit snappier and faster if I could get it to hook up, and I wont go with studs.

At first i had the regular stock track on it but then i did the ripsaw and have really noticed a big diffrence in the way that it feels. i don't seem to have much track spin on the trail. The hook up is great on a hard pack lake i can punch it and the skies wil come up off the ground for a good long time the only bad thing about that is you don't have much control. I can now do a wheelie on it no problem because of the hook up. The only thing that i havent mastered yet is the stoppie still working on that one but will send you a picture when i get the hang of it hehehehe that would be cool if you could do that though. But i am really in love with my ripsaw. it was either that or studs because they cost the same but i am glad that i went with the ripsaw.def. agood choice. ;)!

Yes i have aaen pipes. When the sled worked, it was awesome. Even without any clutching, it would eat 800cc and RX1 for breakfast.

I also love my viper. Or at least i loved it. Last saturday when i raced a friend over a lake, the center cylinder stopped working. I´ve removed the pipe today and discovered many scratches on the piston. I have not checked how the cylinder looks like, but if that also has scratches, which i think it has, my season is over.
For one new cylinder + mounting it, yamaha wants 11000 SEK (~1500$), i bought the sled for 65000 SEK. So that is not an option.
It hurts even more to see some guys riding 1000 of miles with their Yamaha without even change a belt or a spark. Unfortunately my viper wasn´t as bulletproof as i hoped it would be.
I´m convinced that bad jetting caused this to happen.

I feel your pain Heimdall, What was the distance across the lake you held the sled wide open? Did you back off the throttle a bit to 3/4 throttle after making a long pull like a mile or so? Those are some crazy prices, Do you have someone who can help you fix it yourself? You may get lucky & only need to replace the piston or if the cylinder needed replating here in the states is $160.00. Send me your postal code & I will see how much it would cost me to help a T/Y brother out & send you one of my stock pistons. ;)!

The 160 mains have been on the safe side for jetting for us, I ran 160's with the TempaFlow for 4000 miles, RedDog runs 158.3's & no rear cooler & Flounder runs 157's all vented to the airbox.

It could have been water in the gas or bad gas got you into detonation killing the cylinder or the wrap on the pipes just made too much heat for the long pull on the lake or you backed off to 3/4 thottle & got into the timing spike that has killed many pistons? I need more info but I will help as much as I can from here! Bushman

Thanks for your compassion Bushman. The distance were only less then 1000 feet. I usually dont have full throttle over a long distance, and i always stopped and let the sled be cooled down after a lake race.
Luckily my cousin is a former drag race champion, and he has promise to help me with the sled.
Yeah i hope the cylinder is okey. In that case i should maybe be able to ride this weekend.
I´ve talked to some guys over here that can fix the cylinder, just in case. The bad thing is that it´s illegal to replate nicasil cylinders here in Sweden. It has something to do about the environment. So they will shipp it over to England or Belgium. And it´s going to take at least 2 or 3 weeks before i get it back. And by that time, the season is over here. But 160$ did not sound so expensive. I´m going to find out how long it would take for me to get it back if i ship it to the states.

LOL! Thanks for the offer! ;)! But it´s my mess, and i will have to clean it up myself.

Do you know what to do with the airbox? I´ve seen many that modded theirs.

Right after the sled died, i checked the sparks. And the center spark was white. The piston also has many scratches on the exhaust side. The people i´ve talked to all believed i had wrong jetting. But i also think it could have something to do about the wrap on the pipes. They get freakin hot. It was a pretty warm day, and we had been riding for about 3-4 hours when it happened.

Appreciate your help!

1000' makes it a tough call, Could be fuel but after riding for 3-4 hours I would doubt it unless you picked up some water from the tank. Add a little water & you can burn down with 165 mains. Pull the head off & see if its a burndown (melted top of piston on exhaust side) or a overheat that just damaged the sides of the piston. Look @ it this way, If its a burndown it means you were getting it done & just crossed the edge & if its a overheat you just got screwed.

If the piston was overheated you are going to need to put a thermostat in the sled, I know I just put one in my Viper. My old T/stat would not open untill 135* & only open 1/4" & when pulled out of the water it would totally close in less than 30 seconds where as the new T/stat would open sooner & take 3-4 min to close. Funny how $40.00 can cost you so much more :o|

I will remove the head later today to see what the piston looks like. I will also take some pictures, so maybe one of you guys can see what have caused it.

Which is the easiest way to empty the cooling water?

Thanks for the link. Too bad they didnt have the site in english. But i will send them a mail.

I pinch off the upper coolant hose by the coolant tank & use a shop vac to suck the coolant out from the head after removing the coolant hose from the head. That way you dont end up with coolant in the case or on the floor. You will need a 12mm socket for the head bolts & a 14mm socket for the cylinder bolts. I hope they cut the exhaust manifold gasket into 3 parts when the put the pipes on otherwise you will need to pull all three pipes to get the gasket off. Lets hope there is not a lot of piston trash inside the case.

Thanks for the good info. The pipes is already removed. Lets hope it´s not a mess down there.

powersealusa.com is the English site.

I figured the other site may have been closer to Heimdall, Chris @ www.powersealusa.com is great to deal with & he does a very quick turnaround. We have used USChrome & Millenium over the years & after seeing Chris's work firsthand any plating needs in the future will go to Chris.

YES!!! The cylinder was okey! The piston has melted on the front all the way down to the piston ring. Maybe a bad picture but i think you should be able to see what´s happen.
I can´t tell you how happy i am right now!

Does anyone have any idea why this happen?

When i have change the piston, i will ride with the standard single pipe, just in case.

good call on going back to stock, at least until you can figure out what needs changing :) congrats

Thanks :) Yep. I was really lucky this time. Maybe i´m not so lucky next time. I will ride it stock for the rest of the season, but i´m pretty convinced that i will pipe it again next season. But of course not before i have found out what caused the meltdown.
