you can use that Maxima Tundra oil for your premix. Just to let you know I ran premix in my 600 twin for the first 300 miles to make sure that everything was right. It was kind of smokey but I really didn't care just didn't want another failure and I didnt even foul out any plugs during that time.
the shaft on the oil pump is not long enough to make contact with the water pump drive shaft..... the oilpump looks like it is worn..... it looks like its supposed to be flat all the way out almost to the end of the shaft!!!
the shaft on the wp pully is worn on one side..... would a slight amount of play in the water pump wear the pump like this???? or did the seller just install a bad oil pump to begin with????
does this look right????

its worn exactly the shape of my water pump shaft.....

Hey Bud you found your problem!!! Good work!
Replace the pump with a new one and you should be good to go!
This issue is exactly why you premix a new or rebuilt engine[like you did]...until you know she's pumping oil properly.

Hey Pete........ I need some more parts!!!!
I need an oil pump, If you could please find me a used one with your connections that would be a huge help!!!!!
I am also going to need to machine a bushing to get the play out of the Water Pump pulley, sooooo Im gonna need a new mechanical seal for the water pump it was a little worn when we put it back together...part# 82M-12438-00-00

As an after thought....
Check your water pump shaft for damage/wear, if it looks good[I expect it will] I suspect a previous owner intentionally deactivated the oil pump by grinding its drive down.
The oil pump might have been deactivated for a few reasons:
-stock + improved stock raciing classes require the stock oil pump + system be in place[not that I ever deactivated mine when raciing like this to beat tech inspection...LOL!!]
-some guys just don't like oil injection systems and would rather premix
The troubles occur when you sell a premix only sled to someone else and don't tell them!!!
You could reinstall this pump and just continue to run this sled on premix and not worry about replacing the pump. I would run these big twins at 32:! if you stay with the premix option. I have deactivated oil pumps on some of my other sleds 1981 440 SRX, 1983/85 540 VMAX, 650 Polaris ect with no issues.

every strange and stupid mod I have found on this sled is making more and more sense the deeper I get into it..... the frame being cut for quick motor removal.... the oil pump being ground down....... the rear skid setup all the way soft...... and the general beat up condition of quite a few of the chassis components!!!!!
I think someone raced this sled and offed it after they JB Welded the crank case......... Im sure I will find more!!!
what else should I check????
what other mods could have been made that I wouldnt be able to see????

I thought that JACKA$$ put a new oil pump on this sled..... Didn't you state that the pump was loose when you bought the machine??thstorms said:the shaft on the oil pump is not long enough to make contact with the water pump drive shaft..... the oilpump looks like it is worn..... it looks like its supposed to be flat all the way out almost to the end of the shaft!!!

if you need a water pump shaft I have one I think.

is the pulley attached to the shaft still???
it looks like the shaft is steel pressed into the aluminum pulley...... I was going to machine a brass bushing to go between the shaft and the bearing but if you have one I need it!!!!!!!!!!!
I will post a pic of the shaft and pulley later tonight....
How much do you want for the shaft????

I also need the bearing that goes in the crank case for the water pump shaft #93306-20117-00

I am sure that I have a used bearing also let me check tommorrow and get back to you. I will give you the used beaing and shaft if you pay the shipping. Pm me your info and I will check first thing in the morning and get back to you. And I am pretty sure that the pulley is still on the shaft. Or if you want I have a used water pump that I could sell you for $30 buck shipped just let me know how you want to go.

I guess you might come to that conclusions thstorms, but I don't think it was raced because while it is a good motor, it was not as fast as many other 600 cc twins in that era.
I have a feeling the guy was just a backyard hack mechanic.
I am glad you figured out that the pump was not right.
Looks like the hack mechanic also could not figure out how to get the exhaust pipe out the belly pan correctly. LOL

come on now!!!!! dont poke fun of my hacked up shade tree mismatch snirt rocket!!!! LOL were going to put the custom tub work repair under the tuning of this sled and that comes after it runs, pumps oil, drinks gas properly, ...... all by itself!!! LMFAO
the selling thread would have been a little more accurate if it said "this sled needs a little TLC"
P.S. did you notice the belt cover though!!!!!
