Back to the old hard-starting SRX situation

OK, so I read in a different post that yamaha has gone back to the 98, 99 fuel pump to replace the 2000-2002.

My question is, do any of you guys with the 98 and 99s have the same hard starting (when cold) issue that the guys with the 2000-2002 pumps have?

Trying to pin down if it is the fuel pump or not. My 2000 runs great once it is started, and starts up well when it is already warmed up, but not when ice cold.

Also, has anyone else put on the Red Head fuel pump like SideShowBob has?
 
my 98, takes maybe 4 or 5 pulls with full choke sitting out at the cabin in sub-zero temps, prolly the best starting sled ive owned ;)!
 
i'm thinking about putting a sxr fuel pump on my '01 srx as well, as it can be a bear to start cold sometimes. sometimes you can pull 40 times, before you get a sputter, w/full choke. i wonder if its something w/the rubber diaphram in the fuel pump??....cause on a buddies '02 viper, he used to have to dump a cup of hot water on top of the fuel pump on cold mornings to get it to start. maybe to soften up that rubber diaphram?? now the sled has a new viper pump on it, and it starts up in 2-3 pulls cold.
 
My 2002 SRX has been sitting since the end of Sept, when I cleaned the power valves. I just went and started it at -5c/23F...it fired on the 7th pull and was idling on the 8th.

you lucky dog! lol. i hope mine starts easily enough. it should, as i just give it a little shot of starting fluid into the cylinder. then it likes go almost right away.
 
So SideShowBob, what do you think? Replace it with a red head fuel pump like you did? Is that the same pump as the SXR pump that mopar1rules is referring to in his post above?

The SX + SXr[red head] pumps should be the same. These pumps are more expensive even then the SRX pumps so I hate to recommend people change pumps in case my cold starting improvement was an isolated case.

I'll let you judge for yourself:

Facts On my 2002 SRX:

-two separate SRX fuel pumps[one brand new] would only dribble fue[at best]l at recoil cranking
-my 1999 SX700 fuel pump had a steady stream of fuel at recoil cranking
-sled starts much better after sitting for a long time or when cold with no other changes
-put 2000+ miles on my SRX with the SX pump with no issues at all

Looks to me like I will be buying the redhead pump, Bob. You gave me the part number last year but I didn't get around to ordering it. Thanks for the info.
 
I had a 98 SRX and it always started great. About 4 pulls and then it was idling. My 00 is much worse. It always sputters and dies a couple times then fires. Once its running its fine.
 
So I have a theory that the new sytle fuel pump used on 2000-2002 caused some hard starting, and that is why they went back to the 1998/1999 fuel pump. But just a handfull of guy's opinions isn't enough to come to a solid conculsion. And I am thinking that if Yamaha is like a lot of other places, they used up the old style pumps before going to the new style, and so the 2000 year was probably a mixed bag, i.e. those with the left-over pumps staring easy, and those with the new style pumps starting hard.

Damn, it would be so cool to have a handfull of guys that worked for Yamaha around to answer some of these questions. I would start taking Japanese language lessons.
 
mine right now is a pain to start at least 20 plus pulls, it's a 2000 so I just pour mix gas in each cylinder and she fires on the first pull
 
Mines the same at the start of the season, real pain in the you know what. After bringing it out of storage though and getting it running it starts perfect, 4 pulls at most in -30.... the initial startup though is a workout lol
 
fresh rebuilt motor here and standing for 2 weeks or so..took 11 pulls to start.And that is in the garage at about 45 degrees F.
The 2001 SXR is always easier to start also...usually 3 to 4 pulls.
 
My arm is already feeling sore and I haven't pulled it over yet, and I am tired of pulling the plugs to dump gas down the jugs. So I am going to give SideShow Bob's remedy a try - I ordered out a new red head fuel pump. I will let you guys know if it made a difference once I get it installed.
 
a quick fix for these hard starters hook ur self up a self primmer, u can get them from the skidoo dealer. save ur back and use ur head. i put this on my exciter and 2 pulls and its running other wise after siting for a week or very cold start maybe 20 pulls. u have 2 remember these pumps are working on vacum and not a lot of vacum happing when they are very cold. AL
 
Don't use starter fluid lest you be scolded by every expert on TY. :D:DP

Come on Sno, you know I'm just messing around joking. I'm the one that used the stuff and got lucky. ;)! I always really appreciate your kind words, Sno!.


And I am jazzed today guys. Trails officially open tommorrow and it's been snowing since 6 pm last night. 6-8" total so far. I was up at 5 am this morning snowblowing with a smile on my face the whole time!
