Stand by. The redhead fuel pump should be at my door any day now and I hope to have it installed by the end of the weekend. Then I have to hook up the power valves and adjust them before I give it a yank. I have a busy schedule for the next week plus, and then I can get back to this experiment. I will keep you guys posted!

any updates on this issue My 00 srx took 25 pulls the other day and 31 yesterday 10- 15 * F after sitting for about 4 days each time
I'm also thinking of putting a shutoff on it
when the engine is warm or only sitting for a couple of hrs you only have to pull it about 3 inches and it fires right up for now I will just pull the plugs and dump some gas in the cyl's because 31 PULLS goodnight

LIFE MEMBER ONLY ONCE!!!
Have to make sure your choke is opening all the way when you flip the lever.Used to take around 9 to 10 pulls, now adjusted choke properly and fired up at 4 pulls yesterday..maybe something to look at..

The fuel pump is in as of yesterday. Had to make two trips to the store(s) to try to locate some fuel line because I threw the other stuff away. It is 5mm, so 1/4 was too big of course. Then I went with 3/16 which is 4.8mm. If you decide to do this, then heat some water up in a coffee cup in the micro, lay the end of the plastic fuel line in there for a minute or so, and then it will be flexible enough to just barely slip onto the connector.
So, I hope to get the power valves back in and set today, then the exhaust and a couple of other little things. I am pressed for time and won't be able to get back to it until next weekend. Hang in there, I will have a report for you next weekend for sure. I will be glad to get it out of my garage!

My 02SRX typically 10-pulls when cold my old 98 used to be 4 pulls must be the fuel pump

My Viper is a PITA to start after sitting over the summer. Takes gas down the jugs about 4 or 5 times.
The engine simply isn't getting gas, so has anyone actually installed a ball primer to push gas to the engine? This seems like a simple answer to these hard starts... Just like the ball used on outboard engines?
Anyone... pics... thoughts?

There have been people that have installed primers on their SRXs but check out the following thread, go to page 11 post 108 it explains what I found when trying a bulb type primer.

I have the power valves set, need to do a couple other things to it and hope to pull the cord this weekend to find out if the new redhead fuel pump is the answer.

OK here is a preliminary report.....I got everything back together tonight and didn't have any left over parts, so.....got out a fire extinguisher just in case the new fuel lines were to leak or who knows what else - I like my garage the way it is.
Anyway, being that ALL the lines were bone dry from putting on the red head fuel pump, I dumped gas down the plug holes and gave it full choke. It started after the 4th pull and stayed lit.
This is not a true test by any means, because I had to dump the fuel down there, but in my experience, even when I would dump fuel down there, it wouldn't stay lit and I would have to pull some more to get it fired up again.
So it is going to sit overnight tonight, then tomorrow I will try it with just the choke and see how many pulls it takes.
Not only did I replace the fuel pump with a red head fuel pump, but also put on a new vacuum line to the fuel pump, a new filter in the tank pick-up line, cleaned the carbs (which had one pilot jet plugged solid and the other two partially plugged, cleaned the power valves at which point a discovered two of the three were pulled through. So anyone or all of these could be contributing factors as to why it has started hard for me every morning in the last 2 years that I have owned it. But if it will start with just the choke in a reasonable number of pulls tomorrow morning, then I would be inclined to say the red head fuel pump was a major contributing factor.
I will post again tomorrow afternoon.
My thanks to all you guys that have helped me accomplish the above. I have learned a lot about the sled, saved some money, and know that it was done how it was supposed to be done.

The jury is in. Red Head fuel pump did the trick
It appears as if FINALLY my hard starting SRX problem has been solved. Cold engine this afternoon, and THREE pulls. It has never started that easy! I have to believe the red head fuel pump did the trick.
Let her snow!

I am taking it on a trip tomorrow, so it will be a week before I get back to you guys. That will be the real test. You won't hear anything from me until then.

needaSRX said:mine right now is a pain to start at least 20 plus pulls, it's a 2000 so I just pour mix gas in each cylinder and she fires on the first pull
I have to do the same in fall when I go to start it for the first time. last night about 18 degrees with full choke id say about 10 pulls.

Have you done any maintance to your sled. Thats too much. My 98 starts on 4th pull cold/full choke and one pull hot/no throttle.

I have done a ton of maintenance to mine and I started it for the first time of the season and it took 27 pulls. But I never put gas in the cylinders and my carbs were bone dry from cleaning them! And yes the choke was adjusted right. Oh and it was about 55 degrees in the garage.

I am back from my trip and the jury is in. It took 6 pulls after being trailered for 300 miles and a temp of 16 degrees. The folllowing days, it took about 3 for the first start of the day. When shut down on the trail, it took ONE, sometimes TWO to restart it, as opposed to pulling and pulling like it used to. I am a believer that the red head fuel pump made a huge difference in the ease of starting. I didn't have to pull the plugs one time and dump gas down the holes to get it to fire. It makes life a lot easier.
Your experience with the "Red Head" SX pump on the SRX is the same as mine...a huge improvement in starting especially after the sled has sat for a long while.
Some additional food for thought:
The SX fuel pump I installed on my SRX came off of our Improved stock 99 700Sx when I added a SRX pump to it[thinking it may have higher fuel flow]. We just pulled the SX out of the snow the other day and started it up for the first time this season. We had to pour fuel down the cylinders 3 times and it still quit and needed a few more pulls before it would stay running. When we pulled our other identical "Improved" 99 SX out, with its original fuel pump, it only needed fuel down the cylinders once and it actually stayed running on its first start.
Things that make you go HMMMMMM...

Bob, I had basically the same experience with mine when I finally got it back together. New fuel lines, in-tank-filter, and fuel pump, so obviously she was bone dry. I put some gas down all three, and she started up and stayed lit until she smoothed out.
Thanks again for the info, Bob. I was about ready to shoot it.

With all the "crap" being found in the carb float bowls (during cleaning) with today's fuel, I wonder what the internals of our fuel pumps look like??? Suspect/weak fuel pumps to start with, add the "crap" and it may only compound the problem... HMMMMM, oh sorry SSB!
