Father and daughter viper project!!

Here's that damn exhaust stud bolt. I going to take the jug off to try and get a better hold on it and go from their. Man this has been a thorn in my side so far. Chris

If you have access to a welder just weld a nut on the shank. The heat from the weld will break the threads loose in the jug. Old mechanics trick from many busted manifold studs on aluminum blocks. The cool part is the heat will break it loose. After you weld the nut on, you can probably spin it out by hand if you still have the welding gloves on.

that is AWESOME seeing your daughter out there working in the garage :) nice to see a kid taking an interest and working a bit for something! looks a like a great project, and looks like you got a great kid there :) have fun man

Thanks viperguy, she really is a good kid. We have our moments but dont we all. This does give me a slight chance to be cool again. She is 14 so they know everthing at that age, at least i did at 14 LOL. But she dosent know snowmobiles (taking every moment in i can)!! She is really into so far and learning. Taylzee i wish i had a welder or knew someone who had one to bring by, but it looks like ill just be taking the jug off for one more try. If i cant get it out RX1JIM has offered to get it out for me so ill take him up on that. Wanted to put on a opticool head gasket anyway. Thanks for the great comments. Chris and Elizabeth.

Skid and bearing work from today.

While elizabeth was at school i finished up tearing skid down. Got all the bearings out and ready for cleaning. When she got home she got here work robe on and came on out to the cave. I must say she wasnt too into the whole bearing thing but i dont blame her neither am i. This was one of those not so fun jobs but she rolled up her robe and got the job done. Proud moment for dad, really showed she's into this project for good and bad. Were pretty much done for a while. Now we can get are parts list together, get the belly and tunnel cleaned ect. Then once we got all our parts the fun can begin. Putting back together. Here's a few pic's. Chris

My girls are 6 and 3. They both like ridin with dad so far! Just have to get them an enticer. Not much out there for a decent price. This thread really gives me hope though!

yeah, Lyndi (my girl) LOVED getting pulled around in the old Ski-Boose a friend gave me a year or 2 back. I groom for the local club and have a skandic SWT to pull her around with. she LOVES it for sure! next year we need a tiny helmet :)

Awesome project, wish I had the ambition to do the same to mine. Keep the pics coming.

I think its time to change the month on your calender ;)!

Look what we got in the mail yesterday. I scored a pair of rear heat exchange protectors off a late night ebay browsing. I couldnt believe how hard these are to come by these day's. You can tell by the package they have been kicking around for a while. They even came from a local dealer long since out of business. Chris

Well finally got that stud out. Ended up having a brother of a friend that works at a machine shop get it out for me. A quick weld of a nut and some heat and out it came. Put the jug back on today. Hope i did it right, we shall see. I would hate to damage the engine over a 2 dollar exhaust stud. Wont fire it up till fall so i will check for leaks then. Just waiting for head gasket to get here to get the head on. Went with opticool also. Is their any reason i would have to start it up before fall other than to check for leaks? I/E somthing to do with rings, getting gaskets hot again? I dont know thats why im asking. If not i wont fire up till fall. Engine was already fogged for summer. Thanks chris

Got a lot done today. Decided to tackle the primary clutch. It has never been off so i was prepared for a fight. I skipped the middle man and went right to the grease trick. I didnt even finnish tightening up the bolt and pop it was off. Man did that work awesome. To me the mess was worth the ease of getting it off. As you can see by the pics its never been cleaned for sure. Secondary not quite as bad but will need new buttons. Both springs measured to spec so thats cool. Both are ready for the dishwasher next time im alone. The primary was a bit beat up, looks as if a screw or somthing found its way to a running clutch at one time. Didnt seem to effect anything when i had it running. Will double check once it going again in the fall. Chris

Also got a little cleaning done. Gave the belly a good vacume and wipe down with a rag. Too cold out for a good wash yet besides it 39deg and raining. Not bad for a rough cleaning till we can get the hose and degreaser on it. Still waiting for my headgasket to get the top end back together. chris

Here is before

pretty awesome man. still SUPER impressed your girl is out there getting it done with you, that really is fantastic! nice work, coming along

Were getting there, and thanks for the encouragement. Starting to get a good pile of new parts too. Waiting for some bolts and some bigger parts yet but as soon as the weather turns and we can get this thing real clean and on to reasemble. It seem the track will be a big money sticky purchase. Got to wait for funds to get that. But we got time. Just want to get that head back on and out of harms way. chris

I am also going thru my primary and secondary. Make sure to replace all bushings in both (4 all together) as well as the sliders in the primary. Just because the springs measure to spec, doesn't mean they are not worn out. Replace them (they are cheap) for good measure. How does your rollers, collars and arms look? Do the washers show any wear?
