Back to the old hard-starting SRX situation

Ok here goes. I have a 98 SRX always hard starting after sitting more that 12 hours
But I have found a simple trick to starting my machine, even in very cold weather. I simply tilt the sled completely over to the chain case side hold it there for about 10 secs lay it back down pull choke to halfway and it starts within 2 pulls. Try it out let me know if it helps things.

I am back from my trip and the jury is in. It took 6 pulls after being trailered for 300 miles and a temp of 16 degrees. The folllowing days, it took about 3 for the first start of the day. When shut down on the trail, it took ONE, sometimes TWO to restart it, as opposed to pulling and pulling like it used to. I am a believer that the red head fuel pump made a huge difference in the ease of starting. I didn't have to pull the plugs one time and dump gas down the holes to get it to fire. It makes life a lot easier.

Just out of curiosity, did your SRX have the common " high idle lean condition". If so, did you find this improved with the installation of the new pump?

has anybody tried one of the aftermarket Mikuni fuel pumps?

Tough to do on the Yamahas because Yamaha pumps have the oil input lines that the regular Mikunis don't have. I guess if you installed a Bender direct oil injection kit you could use a Thunder Cat pump or some other Tripple Mikuni pump.
When I had my 650 Indy Mod I ran two Mikuni pumps to feed the three 44 round slides, but I was premixing that sled.

After reading this post, order is now in for a redhead pump. Great info!

Post your results after installing the "Red Head" pump and if your results are as positive as MikeSr's and mine we can confidently suggest it as at least a part solution to SRX hard starting issues after sitting for a long time.

I second Bob's motion. Definetaly post your results!

Jay Danials, to answer your question, it would sometimes idle very high with the old pump. And not anymore.

Interesting. Makes me think that the SRX pump may have been the cause for hard starting and maybe the high idle lean condition. Great info!!

oh yea. i forgot about that. bummer. those are only $40.00 as apposed to a $100.00

You guys got me thinking. I can add my input too. I have a 2000 SRX and it has been completly rebuilt. One of the couple of original items still in the sled is the SRX fuel pump and original fuel line. The motor has new pistons, crank seals, carbs all cleaned, new fuel filter you name it it's new. So when it's all done this week I let you know how it starts W/ all new parts except fuel pump and line.

Redhead fuel pump

Hey guys,
Happy new year to all!
I have been reading these posts anxiously awaiting the results on the redhead pump. I want to install one on my 2001 SRX 700.
What year and model redhead pump should I order? I want to make sure I get the right one as I already paid $130 for a new pump last year. Thanks, Mark.

The pump I used was off of a 1999 VMAX SX700 but I think the pump is the same for all years of 700 TRIPPLE SXs, SXRs, and VMAXs...maybe you could pick up a used one off Ebay and save some money. The pumps look the same as the SRX pump except they DO NOT have the rubber bypass line on the top.

why would the fuel pump be the problem for hard start, would the carbs not be full of fuel when shut sled off, i can see maybe days or trailering , but hours later after sled gets cold carbs are still full of gas, mine dont start either, i flip it on the side and let it sit for few seconds, starts 3 pull that way, i was thinking float level maybe? some start some dont with the stock fuel pump, little more fuel in the bowl maybe??

I am gonna try that trick of yours one day.But right now my SRX starts everytime in 4 pulls in the garage. I can see -30 give one more trouble on starting.Keep carbs clean, especially them pilot jets...make sure choke opens all the way, mine wasn't before. Now with the right adjustment starting is easier now.

I started mine for the first time this year Sunday. It took four times gas in the plug holes. After which if its like last year, starts first pull when hot, seven pulls weekend to weekend.

I finally got around to finishing my sled over the holidays. Same as last year I filled the bone dry tank with 4 or so gallons of fresh fuel, pulled the plugs, full choke/kill switch off and tugged three times. Installed plugs and two tugs later two of the three were lit with the mag finally lighting about 3-5 seconds later. Last year I tried rotating the crank back and forth with a surpentine belt before pulling the plugs and tugging so I wasn't sure if that had any affect. As it turns out it doesn't appear that it did since I went straight to tugging without spark plugs.

IMO - the increased cranking speed with the spark plugs removed has made the difference in my -first start after storage- hard start issue. As background, after storage start up required premix down the spark plug holes sometimes more than once. Not any more.

I've never had the cold start or short storage (2-3 weeks) issues that others have. I do get the -crack the throttle after hot soak- no start now and again but otherwise all is good.

This is a good idea. I am going to try that next year to help out my fuel pump.

Same here. You could of posted this last week?! ha ha ha Oh well it beats my first year with the sled, where I cranked at least 100 times after the first storage. What a rookie I was. ;):D

Thanks for the trick! Will try it next year.
