although ive read about this issue, Ive never had issues getting mine started, except for the first start after a long summer. I would recommend installing a check-valve in the fuel line, right near the pump, to stop fuel from making its way back to the tank

I am new to the sledding world, and NEW to the yamaha family, but I will say that I was impressed with the SRX this past weekend. My 600 fired up in 5 or 6 pulls with the choke on when it was 5 below zero farenheit here in MN.
I have followed this thread throughout my "buying" period, and I was quite nervous but had a big grin when it popped off. It pulls tough enough at that cold the way it is to not have to add 20+ extra pulls.

i just installed an updated/backdated OEM fuel pump tonite. after having the fuel lines empty and a new pump i pulled it 4-5 times before it fired up. granted it probably still had fuel in the carbs, but after i shut it off it fired up with no effort on the first pull, and it wasn't even up to temperature. i'll try it again tomorrow evening and see what results i get after sitting all night. hopefully it was worth it.

well it's been a couple of weeks since i installed that new pump. at first i was really upset because the day i brought it home from work i bet i pulled on that thing 50 times before it started. after having the carbs off to clean them last fall i realized i had the choke out of adjustment. so after correcting that it starts pretty easy now. i went riding last sunday and it started with about 6 pulls @ 13degrees outside. i started it tonite with about 6-7 pulls and it was 5 degrees. i would say the new/old pump did the trick. but then again it could have been the choke the whole time. but i'll tell myself it was the $100 pump... for peace of mind.

I finaly got my parts from yamaha parts nation (i.e. cycle parts nation). They said parts would be delivered on the 14th,but did not arrive until the 18th. Oh well. I will install the pump asap, but a sick child and wife might ge tin the way. I will do my best. I am REALLY hoping this new pump saves my arm and shoulders!!!

im gonna say it has nothing to do with the fuel pump my 01 used to take 15 - 25 pulls after it sat overnite and it was a combination of the screens in the carbs and the filter in the tank being dirty i cleaned the screens and replaced the filter now it starts second pull even after sitting a couple days
My stock 2000 SRX starts 4th pull everytime (even below 0 F). 6 pulls after leaving it for the summer.
Adjust choke and clean fuel system.

My 2000 MM700 has this hard starting problem after sitting for a week or more. I found an easy way to prime the fuel pump, which seems to solve the problem.
To prime the pump I added a tee and vent with a plug to the pump suction line. I remove the plug, blow into the TANK vent until fuel rises in the line vent, then replace the plug, and it fires on the first pull.
This seems to prove that the fuel pump loses its prime, but why?

GUYS GREAT POST. MY 2000 SRX WAS ALWAYS A GREAT STARTER UNTIL RECENTLY. I HAVE HAD THIS SLED START WITH NO CHOKE, THATS HOW GOOD IT IS, BUT LATLEY, WHEN COLD IT WON,T EVEN BARK ON FULL CHOKE. I HAVE TO ACTUALLY CRACK THROTTLE SOME AND ROW UNTIL IT FIRES. I AM GONNA TRY THE SX FUEL PUMP. GREAT IDEA. 3:16 (yammie tony)

?????? Screens in the carb? where are there screens? I have had the carbs off all three SX700s and my SRX 700 and never seen any screen. I haven't changed filters in some time, but after starting for the first time, the sleds fire up first pull everytime, even after sitting for a hour or more.
MIE GOD there must be something else wrong here,,,,,IT'S 3:17 NOW............HEHA.........YAMMIEGOD3:16 said:GUYS GREAT POST. MY 2000 SRX WAS ALWAYS A GREAT STARTER UNTIL RECENTLY. after u pull the float off and take the needle out there is a brass fitting that is held on with a lil phillips screw take that off and the screen is under it

If you have to crack the throttle to get it lit when cold I'd guess you're rich at crank not lean (leaking needle/seat). I have a need to crack the throttle when warm occationally but not cold.
No need to choke when cold would suggest it's being "primed" over night by a again, a leaking needle/seat.

re: hard starting SRX700
My 1999 SRX700 was a pain in the but to get started. I used to have to pull the plugs, squirt starter fluid in there and then give it a try before it would finally fire. It got so bad last Winter that I put it away early because I didn't have the time to try and get it going when I wanted a quick ride.
My symptoms were, no matter at full choke, I could pull and pull and pull and barely get a burp out of the SRX. If I did get it running (with the help of the starting fluid), then it was hit or miss if it would restart after I shut it off - even if it was warm.
Anyway, so we're knee deep into this season's riding weather, and I decided I'd had enough. Yesterday was my birthday, I had taken the day off, so I figured one of the things I wanted to get done was to go through the carbs on the SRX and see if there was any obvious signs of trouble.
Well, THAT did the trick. There were definite issues with some of the jets and passages. I cleaned them all out, blew compressed air through them, and then reassembled the carbs and put it all back together on the motor. I adjusted the choke and throttle cables and got to work. The first start was difficult, but I chalk that up to the fact that the float bowls were empty, since the carbs had been disassembled. I got it running, adjusted the idle speed once it was warmed up, and then took it out for a run. It certainly ran great!
Then, to be sure, I let the SRX sit overnight and tried starting it again today. I put the choke on full, and about 4 or 5 pulls in it fired right up.
So, I would definitely recommend two things from my experience if your SRX is hard starting: 1) make sure the plugs are good, and 2) go through the carbs and make sure they really are clean.

hard starting 99 srx
I too had a hard starting 99 srx 700. After 2 or 3 days I would crank 20 pulls or more and then end up dumping gas in the cylinders to get it to fire. I read all of these posts and then bought a red head fuel pump-new-and put it on as well as replacing the pilot jetswith new. sunday morning was 2 deg. and the sled was out all night. 5 puls and it sat and idled at half choke for 30 secs. and then no choke. Forgot to say that I replaced the filter inside the tank also. So whatever of those 3 things fixed it I dont care all I know is its running like it should be. Thank you to this forum.

Can give an update on the sled now. As I posted before everything about my sled is new or replaced except the original SRX fuel pump and fuel line. I was able to test it throughly this last weekend 3 days of riding and 200 miles. During the day it was in the the low 20's and at night it got in to the single digets and down to 0 a couple of nights. In the morning after sitting in single digets W/ full choke it started after 4-5 pulls. In the evening in the 20's after sitting all day W/ full choke it took 4-5 pulls. Now the only time it varried is when I was out on the trail and we would shut down and relax for a while. Some times it took 1 pull w/o choke due to it still being warm or 10 pulls w/o choke due to it still being warm. So don't know why it would be doing that.
