re: hard starting SRX700
My 1999 SRX700 was a pain in the but to get started. I used to have to pull the plugs, squirt starter fluid in there and then give it a try before it would finally fire. It got so bad last Winter that I put it away early because I didn't have the time to try and get it going when I wanted a quick ride.
My symptoms were, no matter at full choke, I could pull and pull and pull and barely get a burp out of the SRX. If I did get it running (with the help of the starting fluid), then it was hit or miss if it would restart after I shut it off - even if it was warm.
Anyway, so we're knee deep into this season's riding weather, and I decided I'd had enough. Yesterday was my birthday, I had taken the day off, so I figured one of the things I wanted to get done was to go through the carbs on the SRX and see if there was any obvious signs of trouble.
Well, THAT did the trick. There were definite issues with some of the jets and passages. I cleaned them all out, blew compressed air through them, and then reassembled the carbs and put it all back together on the motor. I adjusted the choke and throttle cables and got to work. The first start was difficult, but I chalk that up to the fact that the float bowls were empty, since the carbs had been disassembled. I got it running, adjusted the idle speed once it was warmed up, and then took it out for a run. It certainly ran great!
Then, to be sure, I let the SRX sit overnight and tried starting it again today. I put the choke on full, and about 4 or 5 pulls in it fired right up.
So, I would definitely recommend two things from my experience if your SRX is hard starting: 1) make sure the plugs are good, and 2) go through the carbs and make sure they really are clean.
