Oh dang, good thing ya caught me. The gas can was hovering over the sled in a moment of weakness. lol
I appreciate it.

should only have a few mm play sideways, not 1/2"..that is not right.I will go and measure my spare jackshafts I have here

it gets more weird ..You say your jackshaft is 24 1/2" long end to end.I have 2 spare shafts here, they both measure 25 1/8"long end to end. From the clutch end to that stop I have 20 1/2" long..measure again, guess it will be hard for you to get an exact length since it is now installed to the sled.

Alright. Using a marginally more scientific approach(piece of 2x4 for a straight edge) at either end, I came up with 20-1/2 from the brake rotor stop clip to the clutch end and 25-1/4 for total length.
Given my method, it seems I may have the correct jackshaft.
But I going to check again.

then it has to be the 2ndary clutch that is out if your shaft is correct.Gears look ok..man this is getting a little crazy.Did someone maybe move the side frame where the jackshaft goes thru???? lmao95rxl650 said:Alright. lol, I wouldnt be surprised. I did check for any damage and cant see any indication of it anywhere on the sled.
Using two levels and bungies this time, I measured 25 but the levels arent perfect. I'd say it's the correct shaft.
Does it appear the same? From pics, the secondary looks right.
The big question is if the jack is the correct length, why do I have 4" from the bearing bulkhead to the end of the shaft and you only have 3-1/2 ???

Seal the deal measurement.
I have 1" from the mating surface/edge of the chaincase to the end of the jackshaft. That means the shaft extends itself into the bearing an inch.
If there's supposed to be 1-1/2 " sticking out past the edge of the case, then I'm screwed. lol
Guy I got the collar from says his 98 700 has 3-7/8 from the bearing out.
I can get access to his parts sled, but not till Saturday.

Hello 650, here's a comfort trick I use when I'm changing out gears, put a straight edge on the out side of both gears right from the bottom to the top after they are torque. There should be no space any were on the straight edge. Then redo with the chain on. Takes more time but gives you the piece of mind.

Dont suppose you have your case cover off do you? lol
Just got a call from the dealers. My new primary clutch puller is in.
Now I'm really afraid. lol
How are you making out. I guess your waiting on parts too?

Just from looking at the pic's i would say your jackshaft is not all the way in right on your chain case side. Just from looking at pics from my teardowns i have a lot more thread showing on top gear when bolted in. Check where it goes into the brake rotor again and make sure it aint bound up or the key is off. You mentioned this but never heard if you checked it.

There's that clip on the jackshaft that the brake rotor stops on. It's tight to the rotor. Although it's hard to see down in there with the caliper still on, it appears to be within 1/8" max if not tight to it, so the jack cant go any further into the case.
This is messin with my chi. Guys are callin to head out and I might be down until Saturday when I can get to a parts sled. lol

A couple measurements I'm not sure on yet.
The depth of the secondary. Measuring through the center of the clutch, mine is 5-9/16" front to back. Is this correct for the srx clutch?
The second, is the length of the jackshaft protruding from the chaincase.
Measuring from the lip where the seal mates to, I have 1" protrusion to the end of the shaft.
If anyone has things apart and could check, I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
I have access to a 98 parts sled tomorrow, but we have a foot of new snow today. lol

I think I found the problem. When shyte dont look right, it most likely isnt.
I stared at it and took pics to post here and it just came to me while I was out getting a Timmies.
I'm missing part number 19. The outer one. I'm hoping this will take up the extra space I have. once I grab it from the parts sled tomorrow.

You would have the half that is closer to the motor as that is where the bearing sits. Do you have a jackshaft bearing in there currently? What else are you missing in this wonder sled?

Yep, thats all I have. I'm hoping this outer cup takes up the extra space I have.
Bearing is in there and good. Hopefully thats the end of surprises from this sled that seemingly was built from spare parts.
What a headache for a sled that looks mint cosmetically.
The ONLY thing that I havent had tore apart is the actual engine and it runs strong.

nope, thats not missing. in post 38 you have a picture of it already, you have both halves of the retaining cup, they do indeed bolt on thru the inside of the frame with the 2 carriage type bolts that are also in the pic.

If you look close, the carriage bolts are there, but no cup on the outboard side. Are you maybe seeing the speedo cup?
I havent even looked at the sled, but what brought it to mind was me looking at it yesterday and wiping grease off it. I was going to pic the seal out and repack it. Today, I realized I shouldnt be able to see the seal and pulled up the microfiche.
Ahhhh crap, now I have to go look.

It's missing. Just the bolts there. Scared me there for a minute. I have high hopes that this is the one remaining problem and evidence of the previous owners lack of mechanical skills....or morals. Not sure which one is in question, but I'm leaning to the moral side.
We shall find out tomorrow.
